Military deployment fixed blades?

Yes, find out what is acceptable for his unit. Also, if someone were buying me a knife to go to war I'd certainly like some input on the subject. This is not the romantic or flashy choice but how about the SOG Seal Pup Elite? It ticks every box you mention. With your budget you can buy 3 of them. And if he doesn't have a SAK or MT, get him one. Plus a small sharpening stone or DMT.

I very well might. It seems to be a reputable option from other members as well. Thank you.

^^^^ Yup. Might just be pushing your weight factor but a Cold Steel SRK. Aweome blade shape and handle traction. Solid sheath with attachment options.

Yeah I have been looking at this as an option also. Looks very capable although I wish the handle was more fitted to your hand instead of just shaped like a rectangle almost. Can't be too picky though! :)

Thank you to everyone with your recommendations and they are all being deeply considered. Although there is one knife that nobody seems to have mentioned.....

What about the Ontario SP2? Yes, it is a bit over my set weight (9oz?) and maybe that is why it was not mentioned, but this seems to be about a perfect blade other than that.

What are your opinions on it?

Does your buddy have a good multi tool? Also an email or 3 to some of these knife makers with proof of what your saying in the OP. May or may not help you out depends ,but I know quiet a few people that got donated gear.

OP I've got a seal pup and a leatherman super tool as well as the Leatherman with the blade that cab be opened one hand (don't know the name off hand )

Haven't seen the knife or multi tool in awhile since my move but if I find it I'll send them both your way .

If your buddy doesn't want them then just have him pass them off to someone that does . The seal pup has already been to Iraq once and it's fine .

I say go multitool and s13 rmj shrike. The ability to open up holes in walls(for shooting or escaping) and cut live wires amongst other things will make it an invaluable tool for a grunt.

I deployed in 2010 for 358 days and didn't have much use for a fixed blade either, multi tool and hawk is the way to go, trust me.

Do you know if your friend is required to carry his bayonet? Last time I got sent to 'Stan our commander mandated we carry bayonets every time we went outside the wire. It might suck to get your buddy a cool knife that he basically has to leave in his Contico the whole time...

The 1st fixed blade I got for my marine nephew was an Izula 2 and he was pretty pleased with it. Have a Scrap Yard Skinner with a kydex sheath waiting for him right now too. He had checked out my knives on his last leave and liked that handle a lot.

I may look into it. That is very interesting and a nice gesture from those who have donated. Thank you.

Wow that Scrap Yard Skinner looks awesome. Id like to get my hands on one of those for myself! I visited their website and it says that this knife is no longer available. Would you know where to find it elsewhere online or perhaps know of a similar knife?

If only I had $450 it looks like! =D

As of now, I am not sure if he is allowed to carry a personal fixed blade. I will soon find out but would still highly appreciate recommendations in the event that he IS allowed to do so.

Multitool are generally the way to go.

Pair it with a light fixed blade, hawk, breaching tools or whatever feels appropriate for field work.

Examples
Leatherman juice, victorinox swisstool, leatherman wave, victorinox soldier, leatherman MUT
Spyderco aqua salt, spyderco street bowie, mora 2000, kabar

If all he wants is a sturdy utility knife he can save some weight by going for a folder over a fixed blade... on the other hand the knife in a multitool will do most utility tasks just as well while also being multipurpose.

Folders
spyderco endura (3.6oz),
spyderco military (4.5 oz)
CS voyager large tanto (4.6 oz)
CS Recon 1 (5.3 oz)

Fixed blades
Spyderco aqua salt (4.6oz just knife or 7.0oz total with the sheath),
Spyderco street bowie (3.8 oz just knife + ? oz sheath)

Fighting knives are a bit of a sticky topic in that if the military thought you needed a fighting knife or something to get you out of a clinch they would issue it and train you accordingly. Some units are issued such knives and trained to use them... but the majority aren't. Because knife-fighting isn't a very practical thing for the rank and file. They have guns and friends with guns.

You would need to post in the WTB sub forum or watch the for sale section...maybe the 'bay too. It has great steel, very tough and a touch of mean to it. :D

Check out full blooded military combat knives made by Kyzliar, you d hardly find blades for soldier, that will surpass these at their category

Like a few others have mentioned, the CS SRK would fit the bill perfectly. If you want to add some ninja, get a Recon Tanto..
