Military Guy New To Forum

The sog auto is amazingly light and slim. When I fist got it the locking mech was loose and rattled (did not even lock).

I was very close to sending it back and demanding a replacement. After looking at it, I took the lock off made a slight bend and put it back together and she is good to go. Took less than 5 minutes.

It makes an awesome pocket/boot knife. Not sure I would use it for split wood fire, but it seems well made with tight tolerances.

For concealment it is spot on.

Edit: Forgot to mention the auto open spring action is wicked fast. Will bring a smile to any mans face!

G'day buddy and welcome to the forum. I haven't been here too long myself but it's one of the warmest online communities I have come across. I am very interested in what military types have to say about their knives so I will no doubt have a few questions for you. Stay safe mate

Just realized I put up a picture of the CQD Mark I Type E auto instead of my Duane Dieter Masters of Defense CQD Mark 1.

I didn't even know Blackhawk made a cheaper (cost wise) 440 steel one. Interesting

Also found out the Duane Dieter Masters of Defense CQD Mark 1 is guaranteed for life! Awesome

I really like it, my buddy destroyed his trying to split a log (liberally) while using a beater stick.

The failure point was the hinge, it became extremely loose afterwards

Welcome to the forum! My cousin is in the navy, he is an engine mechanic and he is going to deploy again on June 11th (from San Diego). I'm going to visit him the first week of January, with your experience, what knife do you think would be a good gift for him? Hopefully under 130 USD.

@simioh

Definitely want to go with a corrosion resistant blade. Being a mechanic, and on a ship he'll be bending and maneuvering into tight places so you want to keep it small. He will more than likely try to use it as a screwdriver/pry bar so you don't want a pointy tip that will snap off. You don't want one with a smooth handle. If his hands are covered in oil it will be hard to hold onto. Look into the Benchmade rescue/dive knives as a template. Average price is $150 but I have seen them as low as $75 dollars. Corrosion resistant would be the biggest factor. I like full tang, but you can look into folders too. I have this knife and love it. Google Benchmade river rescue dive knife on amazon.com McNett Saturna Stiletto Tip Outdoor and Dive Knife, 3 Inch is $21, Gerber 05640 River Shorty Knife is $38, Benchmade Combo Edge N680 Dive Knife $90, Benchmade Combo Edge AXIS Folding N680 Dive Knife $100 etc etc.

Welcome to BF. Much respect.

DougB2,

Sorry you never got issued a bladed tool.

Thanks. We were going to get bayonets issued before deploying to Bosnia but we didn't because 1) they didn't want Airmen having them in the dorm and 2) we weren't going to need them anyway. I did get my hands on one years later.

Well once again, thank you to all who have served whether you were issued a knife or not ;)

Thanks to those that did not serve. You all are "good peeps" in my book. It is great to see such a positive community of mentorship outside the military.

This has been one of the warmest welcomes I have ever received on any forum. I had no idea obsessed knife wielding people would be so kind! :D

Squirrel, what is do you do in the air farce that has you in the field so much? I have to say, thank god for TACPs, saved me and my teams ass in AFG last year. And hey, welcome to the forums and thank YOU for your service.

I'm a one tango zero, rather not post the name due to "google search" issues. I know you military folks know how to look up an AFSC if you are interested. All I ask is you don't post the name, Active Duty Air Force is all the world needs to know.

Why so paranoid? Posting it this way keeps my screen name/posts from popping up on blind google searches. Can never be too careful, mainly due to personal information being attached to this account. I try to avoid spotlights as much as possible. :anonymous:

Some guys like the attention, I'll wait until I'm no longer on active duty. "Charlie" is out there watching/waiting for us all to slip up! LOL

CM

Can you post a before and after pick of a knife you have waived?
