Military Issue Knives

For all the people that are into military knives, here's the site that has every knife currently issued to US troops. Just search Knife Combat. :D

www.gsaadvantage.gov
Unfortunately all of the knives listed are not what is currently issued to our troops. The knives offered on those pages are common items you would find in the BX/PX for sale. The GSA provides material to BX's and PX's. I know this because I handled and distributed GSA shipments while serving in the USAF.

My understanding is that any contractor can get a GSA number for anything. The item could be actual issue, sold at the PX, or listed in anticipation of future contract or to be considered for bidding.

Perhaps someone could clarify that for me.

Not every knife in that list is issued, but every issue knife is on that list.

A bunch of Schrades too, and they aren't even in business any more. Makes me skeptical of the list's relevence.

OldTimers were made by Schrade. They also have the Avatar, Cliphanger, Schrade multi-tools, and a bunch of others. A search for Schrade results in 257 items, although some of them appear to be unrelated to Schrade Cutlery.

Boy, they sure have a lot of crap on that list...

That's where kids go as soon as they get to 20th Replacement so they can buy a "Real Army Killer Knife", sadly enough, in their minds a Smith & Wesson SWAT fits the bill. I used to laugh at those guys.

The knife issued to the Singapore Armed Forces was recently changed from the V'nox Bantam to V'nox one hand trekker.

For perspective, here's a list of knives commonly issued to main stream units:

Camillus Pilot Survival Knife
BM 5093SBT
Camillus SS Poket knife
Assorted Gerber Multi-tools

90% of Army soldiers don't get issued ANY knife. Have you checked our budget lately, and compared that against the price of a Hellfire missile? It's a wonder we don't have to buy our own bullets!

SOCOM types get a wide variety of knives, but they generally buy them themselves. There is also bayonets, mostly the M9. That list is pretty pointless, but interesting non-the-less. I noticed that there were 1,057 different boots offered. Last time I checked, the Army only issued 11 different boots, and that includes the ECW bunny boots and rain slickers.

I bought my own knives (duh), boots, and my own magazines at times. I don't even want to think about CIF. :grumpy:

I know that Schrade made the Old Timers, but I didn't see Schrades name in the descriptions where I saw Old Timer. Are these the new Old Timers? The Old Timers that were sold unassembled?

Or do I just need to clean my glasses and computer screen?

You gotta be kidding me. I thought soldiers were issued their own bayonets, an all purpose fixed blade, and some type of auto, or a SAK style knife. WTF!

If you do a search for Old Timer, Imperial Schrade is listed as the manufacturer of each cutlery result.

Who knows whether these are outdated entries that the contractors should delete, whether the contractors are buying the 'new' Schrade knives from China, or whether the contractors have warehouses of these ready to ship.

My understanding, they are issued knives/bayonets only if needed, as determined by their CO. Hand-to-hand knife-fights in modern combat is very, very rare. I've read that during the Faukland War it happened exactly twice.

It hasn't been that rare in Iraq. There have been many stories of Marines and Soldiers ending up in hand to hand combat, using knives and bayonets. Particularly during the assault on Fallujah, and in the cemetery near the Imam Ali Shrine.

I think most infantry units get issued bayonets (Ontario M9), which also serves as an all purpose fixed blade. But for everyone else on the ground it's basicly Gerber multi tools, or maybe a Benchmade auto if you get lucky.
