Military Knife/Equipment Forum?

a dead horse when it's down, but I knida don't think a military knife/equipment forum is really needed, either. Although I've been active duty for a little over 16 years, most of the questions that I have , or any info that I may require, can be had in some of the other BF forums that are mentioned above. Also, www.TacticalForums and www.Military.com have some threads that deal with knives & equipment. Anyways, that's my .02, and in todays economy, you know how far that'll get ya'.

BlueFlint, Good luck on your entrance into the military, it's a whole new ballgame, so enjoy ! Oh, what service and training are you lined up to recieve ??:)

I WILL be going into the Army and right now my father is training me to be a Ranger. He was also in the military. First.. I have to finish up school. What service are you in?

Well, guys! I'm not "green", have used knives all my life (as a meat cutter, in cooking, and in 23 years of military service -- Army), and I think the young man has a great idea! There is precious little banter about "military knives" or "knives used by the military" on any of these forums. Knives have always been military weapons and tools -- few other occupations have depended on them as much.

In fact, BlueFlintLock, I'm going to start some right here, right now! Since my retirement from the Army in August 1999 as an 06, my interest in military knives has grown. My daughters husbands brother (I guess that makes him my "Son-in-law's" brother) is an Army SF Captain. He was alerted a month ago that he was being deployed to the "late unpleasantness" in South Asia. Since I like my Son-in-law so much, I told his brother I had a gift for him. I took my new Mad Dog ATAK Hunter to Scott Hendryx here in Boise and had a great tactical kydex sheath made for it. Then I sent it to him before he deployed a couple of weeks ago. I also gave him my Benchmade AFO. Being retired for over two years probably puts me near the bottom of the recall list, but I couldn't stand to see a great soldier go into harms way without a great tool -- perhaps he will be the one who captures Osama, and if he does, maybe he'll "dry-shave" him with it!

So, BlueFlintLock, don't let some of these guys get you down. If you make it through Ranger School, you've accomplished a great deal -- and they will probably let you deploy with a reasonable "personal" knife. I know I would if I were your Company Commander.

Regards,

Bruce Woodbury

a knife category that was a bit less scatterbrained and focused on
something specific ... perhaps the part about "focus" is a bit
too constraining for some of our memebers... perhaps its time for
a bit of segration..im sure that those who are obcessed with
their ballywhackers and those who pack heavy tactical steel
would enjoy the chance to dodge each others trivial pursuits..
perhaps it would open the forum up to new memebers that
come not because they cant find a niche... i say lets have several
new categories..so that we then have > mil-tac / baliwhackers / general folders / hunters /custom & collectible pieces......
works for me..

Great idea. I'd love to see such a forum, especially since you're not just talking about knives, but gear. Kind of a high speed/low drag Gadgets&Gear forum. I'd think that it would interest guys like me, who are no longer in the service, but still have an affinity for military-style gear and tools, active military, and probably LEOs as well. On the downside, I imagine it would attract countless trolls and keyboard commandos, as well, along with the kind of people who can't answer a simple question, but have to pick apart everything you say, for no better reason than that it stirs their nether regions, apparently;)

...and stop apologizing. There's 12,000+ members here. You can't please them all and would be wasting your time to try.

bruce, darkman and Owen, I agree with you all. I understand there would be trolls - but trolls are trolls already and will be trolls no matter what forum you make.

The GEAR aspect of the forum was definitely something I wanted to see happen - There's so much nice and unique military gear used and I see people spread through all the forums bring some of it up here and there with little replies and views. I don't too often see people talk about knives being good for specific combat and different military needs - I don't have time to comb ALL THE FORUMS.

Getting into specifics I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for a real serviceman or ex-serviceman to root out most of the fakes. Besides... does anyone's life depend on a moron wannabe commando? There will be fake commandos with or without a military forum.

It would be nice to go to one forum to talk Combat knives/gear etc. Even to talk about how (example) Black Hawk Down was realistic and for once a more conservative (realistic) military/war movie. But that's just an afterthought.

Thanks guys for not letting the idea go down the tubes that easy - but Spark already told me it wouldn't happen unless there is enough support for it. Which is fair.

And when I was asking for a show of support in the first post... I wasn't asking for a show of angst... I didn't care to hear from people who DON'T want the forum on this thread - this thread was for people who DO want the forum!

Thanks.

Anyone who cares enough to see this forum come about do a simple post in the General Knife Discussion > BladeForums.com Service and Support forum where I already have a thread started... Spark replied and there's nothing else I can say there unless OTHER PEOPLE chime in!

Mmmm... Tempting, but given the breadth of forum topics currently available in BFC, I just don't see what an added forum of this narrow a spectrum (interesting as it is) would be able to satisfy that could not be accomplished by well placed threads in existing forums.

(*Whew*... How's THAT for a run on sentence?:D )

Again, I will say from the beginning I meant this to be a thread for people who are INTERESTED in having a military forum to speak up. I DID ask for a show of support... but people keep feeling they have to diss it... My questions wasn't "should we have it?" it was more like 'those who want it speak up!'.

"Anyone care to sound off and show up some support for a military forum?" is what I asked. By dissing the idea so much, you shoot it down when many people may enjoy it.

If you don't think the forum isn't going to benefit you in any way then it shouldn't matter to you if it were to be created. Yet you shoot it down anyway. If its not going to hurt you to have it... I prefer you not to diss the idea... the THREAD is about a show of support, not about putting a Black Spot on the idea.

Thanks!
