Fallkniven, Swamp Rat, Chris Reeve, Ranger, Ontario, and Bark River will all get lots of use in a military capacity.
You'll probably end up with something like a Ka-bar or SOG if you buy your knife on the base.
Whatever you buy, make a good multi-tool one of the first, if not the first, thing. A Leatherman Wave works nicely.
