Military locking mechanism

Can someone here with a dig. cam and a Spydie military please take some pics of the locking mechanism for me? I'd like some close ups to see how it functions and how sturdy the lock up is. I gave my large model Manix to my son and I've been thinking about another big Spyderco for myself. I live in the boonies and don't have ready access to these knives, so I'll have to order it in. I like big folders and want another good one. Any and all pics are appreciated. Thanks.

It's CF BG-42 Sprint run if you don't mind.

I'm surprised to see all of those loose carbon fibers sticking out like threads behind the liner.

1) While I don't have the digital camera hooked up to my computer, and I'm not in the mood (Monday are frustrating :D), the lock-up on my Militaries are the strongest of any liner lock I've ever used, handled, or owned. I highly recommend any Military model (especially the BG42/CF model, but I'm eagerly awaiting the CPM D2/G10 model coming out in a sprint run) and like it even more than my Manix. It's lighter and carries easier while still having the cutting power; it has some of the best edge geometry I've ever seen. I highly recommend it...use the search function to find other posts where I drool over the design...

God bless you, America, our Allies, and our men and women overseas.

KATN,

Wade

I'm in the same boat as Steelscout. I just received mine in a trade and the other person is still awaiting his end of the trade so I haven't gotten to do much but handle it, but I'm impressed. My large folder of choice for a long time was my G10 Cara Cara, but this knife packs a longer blade with better geometry (Edge needs thinned out a bit though), longer and more secure handle and still manages to be noticably lighter. Most won't care, but it carries clipless much better too. The heavier Cara Cara sank to the bottom of my pocket and layed itself horizontally, while the Millie spends most of it's time upright like when you have it clipped, due to the size and lightness of it. Very comfortable knife. The Manix is an awsome knife too, but it wouldn't get carried by me as much if I still had one because it's nearly twice as heavy and much wider.

I'm a big fan of G10 Spydies with no steel liners or nested liners, like on the original Millie, Yojimbo, Dodo etc. I want to get more of them. I'd love a Lil Temp and I'm actually re-considering the Para, which I traded off due to awkward ergos. I'd like to see Spyderco produce more models with this type of construction.

The liner lock on the military is one of the best liner locks (if not the best) I have handled.

I have put my milie through its paces and the lock has remained as solid as day one.

Thanks all for the pictures and commentaries/observations. I'm sure that you are all dead on and honest about this model, but..... to my eyes the locking mechanism looks thin and flimsy. I'll wait until I have one in my hands for a good look see. My Manix snaped and locked open with authority, I want nothing less.

Well, if you could hear it lock open, you would change your mind :D
It's well made linerlock

The Military lock is reliable. A few thousand users can't be all wrong ;)

Upnorth,

Unfortuantely I can't speak for the liner lock on the Military since I don't own one, but I can speak to Spyderco knives in general. They are well built.

It has always amazed me that folks that curse liner locks love the Military. I assume that speaks for it's far above normal performance as a liner lock. I do have the Captain and it also has a liner lock. It is solid as a rock!

Part of me wants to get a Military, but it seems just a bit too big for me. Maybe the sprint in CPM D2 and green G10 will be the one that forces me to get a Military.

Also, as much as I regret it, there is no fail proof lock on a folder. They depend on springs and springs can fail (so can anything). (Also, hardened steel can break under certain situations).

I think you will find that in normal knife use, the liner lock on the Military will more than meet your needs. If you tend to treat a folder like an axe, screwdriver, crowbar or chisel, then it will break (sooner rather than later). Use it as a knife and you'll be happy.

I actually love the operation of both liner and frame locks. They are simple and clean....

:)

Linerlocks are one of those "deceptively simple" mechanisms. Strength is almost never an issue, you'll usually shear the steel pins or something before a liner actually breaks. The thing is that the geometry needs to be perfect for it not to "slip" off the tang under pressure, and that's where spyderco got it right. In my experience and that of many others it's probably the most reliable factory linerlock in production.

Hi all

i read that the cf bg42 military is supposed to have a second liner or such like .. is this true?
