On Monday, I decided to go on an adventure around the city, letting the Spyderco Military take me where it wanted to go.

The adventure started upon the rooftops:

Then I found an abandoned alley, that is no longer used for cars or foot traffic, but has be appropriated as unofficial backyard space by houses bounding it (judging by the fact that it seemed mowed in places).

The Military took over this short stone wall:

Here is where a tree grew around a fence post...then got eaten by bugs, and cut down. Now a new house is springing up next to it:

And here is a McDonald's garbage bin in the alley, miles from any McDonald's restaurant. But it is still being used. :)

Next, I meandered over to the local skate-park, which has interesting graffiti:

Next up, an abandoned and slightly burnt house:

With a curious cat next door. :D

Then it was over to a building that had been abandoned and falling apart, but is now a mix of old and busted, and new shiny modernity:

Oh well. ;)

Down past the end of the tracks, where the hobos and drunken teenagers play, much wood has been knocked down by storms:

Someone is collecting that wood:

A pretty flowering bud:

The Military harvests it nicely, and the opening hole doubles as a flower holder:

Not only has wood been collected, but a shelter has been erected. It has been there for about a year now; quite camouflaged when summer foliage is thrown over it:

As someone from New Orleans who now lives in Toronto I have never been able to understand why the ONE Zatarains product we don't have up here in Canada is Red Beans and Rice. Easily their best product. I remember how shocked my mom was to find that out when we moved up here.

It's weird what is available here versus there.
Doesn't seem to be any reason why.

yep. looked like it. good day and good eats...what time was supper...did i miss it?:)

Only by a few days. :D
Turned out my wife had made lots of supper the night before I had forgotten about, so it ended up being the night of two suppers.

I really like that graffiti you found with the Samurai, Ninja, and Geisha. Very cool.

I liked it as well. :)
And it was in a place I haven't looked at before.
I haven't had much need for a skateboarding park, but my random adventure walk took me past it, and I am glad I went.
You never know what cool things you'll find on a random, unplanned walk.

I've always loved graffiti since I was a child. I think that it makes an area look much cooler. Now obviously there are places where it doesn't belong but there are places where it looks great.

Graffiti existed since ancient times. When I was in Pompeii you could still see some of the graffiti left over by the ancient Romans. It mostly consisted of stick figures with giant wangs.

It can make an area look much cooler.
In areas where it won't, it usually gets taken down quite quickly anyway.

What I don't like is lazy graffiti, where people just put an illegible "tag" before running away.
They should put the effort into making it look good; for one thing, if it looks good, there's a good chance people will leave it there.

Obviously I am talking about the nicer "street art" graffiti rather than gang tags. (Gang tags can be interesting too if you know what you are looking at)

I have to ask, what is down that hole in post number 2? That hole in the ground right under the pics of the little lean to stick shelter.

It's part of the drainage system for the area; there used to be train tracks going down to the river for a ferry to Detroit (some of the tracks can still be seen; it's a great place to find vintage railroad spikes).
Someone seems to have taken the grate off it, so someone else has covered it with bits of wood.

Which city is that?

You have chosen your adventuring companion wisely. The Military rules the earth.

Windsor, Ontario.

Thanks for the read! And also thank you for calming my fears of finding a wild hitler outside the forest :D

Great trip, enjoyed the pics. Nice seeing those old buildings anything old around here gets blown up or tore down and rebuilt.

Great read and pictures, Stabby!

I also take pictures of the graffiti. I have often thought a good coffee table book would be one of pictures of the many railroad cars with beautiful paint on them; a kiss from the urban artists from the railroad yards of cities in which the cars have traveled.

I may still do that when I have more free time (or take the time from my other activities).

I see your Military is has serrations. As I get more experience, I have learned that serrations are extremely useful.

The Military is a great knife, thanks again for the cool post.

I see the Ambassador bridge.

Yep. :)

Wild Hitlers tend to stay away from urban areas, as the chance of getting stabbed by right-thinking people is quite high. ;)

They tear many of them down here as well, but some manage to survive.

That is a good coffee table book idea.
Some of the art on train cars is quite impressive.

The Military is a great knife, and the serrated version works very well.
I hope they bring the full-serrated option back.
