I have been asked by a family member what knife she should get for her boyfriend for Christmas. He is starting a position as a military policeman in the Canadian Forces. I gave several good suggestions but all were over budget. Any suggestions for a folder in the $50-$60 range. I was thinking something on the large side and heavy duty.

Unless Canadian Military Police do a lot of knife fighting, I would suggest a multitool like a Leatherman. Seems like military very, very often state that a multitool was the "sharp" they used most often while serving.

If the Canadian military is anything at all similar to the U.S. military, it may be more up to the discretion of the commanding officer, as to what the MPs are allowed to use/carry. Might be best to see what the rules are first. These days, it's not unusual for military regs to be at least as restrictive, in some cases more so, than civilian restrictions.

Multitool all the way! Victorinox Spirit should do: right in that price range online.
Still set on heavy duty knife? then American Lawman for the win.

They're all issued a pretty decent Gerber multitool when they join, so buying him a multitool would be pretty redundant.

Almost all the military guys I know keep a knife of some kind (usually the small folding variety) on them in addition to that, just in case they need to cut something in a hurry (with most multitools I've seen and the gerber especially, it takes a long freaking time to reach over, undo the belt pouch, take the multitool out, open the tool, open the knife blade attachment, close the tool, cut something, and then do it all in reverse once you're done).

If you can add maybe 15-20$ to your budget, I'd recommend a Spyderco Manix 2. Pretty abuseable and it will tend to hold its edge much longer than most of the other recommendations in this thread so far (good for someone who maybe isn't a knife nut and won't be proficient in sharpening yet).
