Military vs Skirmish

I can't imagine hardly, two models from B/M and Spyderco more different than the Military and the Skirmish.
One is lightweight for it's size the other heavy.
One has a re-curved heavy blade the other a straighter sharply pointed.
One has an all metal handle and frame lock the other G-10 or carbon fiber, liner lock with a minimum of liner material.
There's really no comparison of these two models IMO other than they are both pretty big knives.
The Military compares better to the 710 or the discontinued AFCK.

I wouldn't say they're a close close, but enough so as to be comparable. It's rare you're going to find those Yojimbo/Gravitator sort of comparisons where they're EXTREMELY similar. Besides, it's the differences we're interested in, and which set of differences has the best net result between the two.

Almost forgot to say nice photos! I love to see these comparison shots...I have handled these two many times, but it's so helpful for those that haven't been able to see one in real life to compare it to one that they might have.

I've always thought of the B/M large Skirmish as being a whole lot different than most any Spyderco.
It's a huge knife with a lot of wide blade packed into a small for blade size handle. (note how far out the blade stop pin and pivot pin are)
Very heavy and robust it has a blade heavy feel in hand. More like a chopper and IMO it's a well balanced knife for it's size.
The Military is light and it's blade very pointy. I think of it more as a slicer and sticker.
If anything the heavy-duty full sized Manix is closer to what the Skirmish is, in spite of being a lock-back and different blade shape. It's comparable in weight, handle shape is closer than the Military as well, but it still lacks the massive wide re-curved blade.

I just never really got into the stylings of the full sized Skirmish's handle....I much prefer the design on the mini skirmish.

Looking at the Benchmade site, it does indicate the knife is unavailable (usually an indication of a knife being cancelled from current production).

The discontinued ones say "[Discontinued]" in the online catalog. The Skirmish just says out of stock. And on ebay, very few people are selling them for $300.

Is there any official word from BM?

Give it time for supplies to dwindle, then you'll see a selling price increase.

Benchmade has historically been rather mum as to what models are to be discontinued. They had two threads on there own forum concerning the issue and the answer was - silence.

sebenzas are excellent knives. if i could only ever have one folding knif eit would be a sebenza. its tough as nails but still pretty enough to be formal

have u considered the manix or mini manix versus the milies? the manix is my favorite spyderco knife.

I like both but the Military is the EDC of my dreams.

The main reason was described by numerous owners a hundred times, so one more won’t hurt ;): it’s phenomenally light & compact for its size. Front pocket, IWB, rear pocket, you name it – the millie fits everywhere without being bulky. The blade geometry and the negative angle give you a fine push cutter. Fine tip, narrow blade and a quite long handle makes it great in my book as a last SD option. I also prefer composites (G10 in this case) over any other handle material and Spyderco’s G10 is the best.

On the other hand I’ve found the skirmish to be one fine tool for backpacking/trekking. There is no way you can damage the tip even if you stick the knife in the ground instead of temporarily closing it. The open back makes cleaning a breeze. The recurve excels at downward cutting and wood carving. The thickness of the blade puts up with batoning (I usually use a small hatchet but I’ve used the Skirmish just to see if it held up).
