I am thinking of purchasing one of the above for my Spyderco collection. In a few months I am headng up to "The Great White North" to do some fishing I will bring either one of these with me as a general duty/survival knife. They are both pretty much the same but which would you choose? Both would be in plain edge.

I have owned both.

I like the Military better for the following reasons.

Larger thumbhole.

Pointier.

More ergo, unlike many, I did not like the feel of the Wegner curve.

Flat ground.

Lighter?

Another vote for the Military.

The Wegner would be better only if you went hunting and needed to skin large animals.

I have never handled a Military but just based on design, I would have to agree with the others. I love my Wegners but classify them as hunting knives, not "survival." I almost always give the edge (no pun intended) to flat or convex edges for survival, unless the blades happen to be very wide like the Becker Companion, and with a shallow hollow grind. Another possibility might be the Benchmade 720. It has a robust blade and an axis lock.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Go Military. As mentioned above, its got a MUCH larger opening hole. In the great white north where one might just wear gloves, this could be a BIG deal. I find the Wegner's blade hole a little small barehanded. Also the Military is easy to carry, lighter and thinner than the Wegner. I've also read that many prefer the liner of the Miltary over the Wegner for reliability. Last, but not least, the CPM 440V should stay sharp longer than the ATS 34, so less in the field sharpening.

I have to disargee with the consensus, the Wenger is a better ourdoor blade in my opinion. Better blade shape for skinning and its point is not as frail. I have seen several Military models with broken tips, yes I know they were more than likely abused, but broken they were nonetheless. And heavier in most survival cutting tasks is a plus, to a point, but in the difference made between folders I would calssify it as a plus.

Another thing I dislike about the Military in a survival role is the Walker, or liner lock. A liner lock with out a lock, is not safe for ambexrtous use, this will get argument, but I have had several close on me, being left handed, and I know half a dozen other swho have had the same happen to them. In many makes of knives!! They did not invent liner lock locks for no reason.

Survival to me means the possiblity of being incpacitated with one hand or the other and I want something I can use relaibly in that situation.

Military.Wegner.Military.Wegner.let me sell you a new Military for $75

Ditto. I would have to agree with the Wegner. The blade shape is much more conducive to outdoor tasks. The Military is nice, but if I could only have one it would be the Wegner.

Something suprising happened I mananged to pick up a used Spyderco Wegner from another forumite for $60! The knife was in great shape and sharpened up well. I am very impressed with this knife! I had planned to get the Military first but could not pass up the deal on the Wegner. I am thinking of having a Military model made for me with a tritium insert, like the ones I have seen on the Spyderco forum here.
I guess after I acquire a Military,I will find some reason to get a Wegner Jr.
I have never used CPM 440V,what are the advantages over ATS-34?

I now own a Military model in CPM 440v and all of you guys were correct about the Military it is a excellent knife. A person really can't go wrong with either one though!

The Wegner design rules. If only it could be built like the AlMare SERE 2K, we would have the perfect outdoorsman's knife. I am not being tongue in cheel or sarcastic, I really mean it. The Wegner is a beautiful and funtional design that was squandered on an execution that pales by comparison to the SRE 2K. On the other hand, the materials and execution of the SERE 2K would have been better served with the Wegner design.

Hate when that happens.
