Military Washers

I recently acquired a NIB Military PE DLC coated. GREAT KNIFE!

It had a bit of a rub stopping it from being 'flickable', it would stop just short of fully open as the blade tang was rubbing the scales. So I took it apart and cleaned it up and lubed, and was somewhat dismayed at what I found, some cheap paper thin-see-through pivot washers, for a knife of this quality and price point I would have expected to see PB's.

Its still a bit stiff, and to find the sweet spot, I have to keep the screws on the stop pin a bit on the loose side as when they are snug it pinches the top of the blade tang.
I'm assuming its an older model as it came in the gray box, has the block type jimping and only has the locking liner nested and a full slab of G10 on the non-lock side.

Is there any type of upgrade washers I can get that are thin enough to fit w/o issue?

I'm just being a bit nitpicky I know!

Its a great knife as it is, but there is always room for improvemnt to make it the PERFECT knife.

Mine all have PB washers. I'd contact the SFO via their website or by phone. (800) 525-7770

How old are they?

This was a NIB old stock judging by the gray box, and the heavy block type jimping on the blade.

Mine has the old ramp style jimping, not the tank tread jimping. The new jimping is fine sharp jimping.

The newer ones have bronze washers. The older Military models, if I remember correctly, have capton washers. Don't hold me to that though. For the record, I haven't noticed much of a functional difference. I own Millies with both types of washers. If you adjust all of the screws and the pivot properly, the Military is flickable, but not nearly as "flickable" as most other liner locks. I think it's just the nature of the beast.

I've got a set of PB's on the way from W&R, They say that they are thicker than the nylons, so it may not function properly.

Time to get out the sander. However looking at it I need a bit of extra thickness as the blade rubs the scales when opening and closing. The only thing will be either a new stop pin, or shimming the current one to function properly.

Oh, I also got the SOP message, if a knife is disassembled manufacture warranty is void. However if you shoot me an address I'll send some out to you.

A bit hipocritical. You provide parts, but then say installation of these parts voids warranty.

That said Spyderco does have one of, if not the best W&R dept in the country!

Spyderco said:
Spyderco's warranty does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening, or normal wear.

If you take it apart and break it, they won't cover it under warranty. If you don't, then you're fine.

Unless you work for spyderco anything you say is heresay.

And I quote direct from an e-mail from spyderco recieved today.

"Also if you take your knife apart it will void any manufacture warranty for your knife. That all being said if you reply with an address I can send you the washers.

Thank you and have a great day,

no where in there does it say damage, simply state any and all disassembly will void the warranty; somthing I'm not concerned about:thumbup:

It's not my words posted there, that's directly from the Spyderco website under the Warranty section.

That section can be clearly interpreted to mean if you damage the knife during dissasembly it's not covered under warranty. I'll email Spyderco about this.

Not trying to argue, just trying to make sure it's clear. I understood that (company name removed to protect the guilty) was the only company that voided your warranty upon dissasembly. :)
