hey all!

been an eager spyderco.com forum, and blade forum reader for many years, and my taste for the "cudly" spiders is ever growing.
my lastest shopping hunger is focused on a military, but i need some expertise help :)

the oncomming military is going to be an "every outdoor trip cary" knife, and is hopefuly going to see allot of work. been lookin allot on the web, searching through forums and reading reviews, and the current candidates is between the d2 fg, "normal" pe, normal ce, black blade pe, black blade ce and the bg-42 cf one.
i own some spydies, and i like the s30v steel, but the "call" of the supersteels is always there. the "thirst" to try something new u might say. lately i have been a little scared off reading about the d2, and how non-stainless it is. is it realy that bad? how is the bg-42 compared?
the military i want must be a knife that can enjoy "a week in the mud" and just need a good rinse and cleaning and be as new. this is where my thoughts on the black blade versions come forth. i love the pics where u see black bladed military and para-militarys in nature. its just like they belong there. am i just being tricked by pretty colors, or does the coating realy work?
not realy made my mind up yet on having ce on the knife, as i always carry my pocket saw on trips, any thoughts?

thanks

Falch

If you plan on letting it get wet I would not get the CPM D-2 version, If you think you can keep it reasonably dry and oil it down regularly then that is the version I would go with (the lock is usually much stiffer on the D-2 verson, which is a good thing IMO).
I EDC'd the D-2 Military for two months, it got wet several times (Kitchen work). I washed out with hot (scalding, it dries faster) water and dried it off immediately every time, the only rust so far is a few spots on the tang by the lock face.
Otherwise I would get the black coated regular, having the coating on the blade around the pivot keeps rust off that area, meaning you won't have to disassemble the knife to polish off rust spots.

I've never had any corrosion trouble with my D2 Military... on the other hand, I've never left it outside in the rain.

As long as you wipe it off before putting it away, you should be fine.

If you're concerned, though, I'd second the recommendation for the black regular. The main advantage of the D2 is the edge retention, but it's not like S30V is bad!

D-2 would be awesome, although it sounds like there's a new version with S90V coming out that would be very nice as well. It's a stainless steel, and if my memory serves me correctly it has been described as the "american ZDP." That might be another option for you to try, although I really think you could pick a Millie blindfolded and anything you picked would be awesome. Or you could just get them all.

For all around use the base S30V model is an excellent balance of toughness and wear resistance. For high polish push cutting edges I'd go with BG42. Pure wear resistance and toughness the CPM D2 model would be my choice. The S90V isn't out yet but I expect good things out of it. Did someone say "get one of each?" That's what I reccomend and what I've done back to the 440V/S60V model. They are ALL GOOD. Joe

The black coated S30V model will offer the most corrosion resistance. You'll have to watch out for the liners getting rusty but it shouldn't be a problem if you let your knife air dry. I haven't gotten rust in any of my Spydies' liners and I'm not even close to anal-retentive about keeping them cleaned up and dry.

thanks allot guys, i guess i will end up with a black coated mili first, and work my way through the lineup when time and cashflow allows it.

sigh, then there is the choice in getting ce or pe :P oh well, guess its up to me :)

thanks again guys!
