i just bought a bg42 millie about a month ago and haven't carried it all that much due to other purchases. I love this knife for many reasons but I noticed one flaw a while back and another today.

First is the backspacer/lanyard hole. one side is slightly raised above the liner while the other side is nested below the liner. Which is correct and why aren't they the same.

Second as I was looking at the blade in the sunlight today I noticed that the tip is discolored. Looks like when grinding they got this needle tip to hot and turned it colors.

Am I overreacting on this. I have never had a needle tip blade before but I wouldn't think that this is normal. Do you think that the heat treat is in question? Should I call CS or the place where i bought it.

What do you guys think?

Nobody have any thoughts on this? Could some people with militarys just let me know if their tip is colored?

1. The tip on my Carbon Fiber BG42 Millie is not colored.

2. The lanyard hole/backspacer is the same on both sides of my millie: slightly nested into the carbon fiber handle.

Does this help?

Andy

Yeah I would send it back. My BG-42 millie doesn't have either of these defects and I've never seen any other Spyderco with a discolored tip.

my bg-42 millie has a similar lanyard tube (slighly recessed on one side only), but the tip is fine. i have heard others having the uneven lanyard tube (insignificant, imo) but i have not heard others having discolored blade tips.

can you post a pic?

The colored tip is from overheating while grinding the edge. I would send it back.

Thanks for the replies. I called customer service earlier today and the rep told me to ship it back. Which by the way I wasn't completely impressed with CS. The person on the other end of the line had no idea what knife I was talking about and told me that they likely had no extra blades from the ones made overseas. I told her it had colorado imprinted on the blade and that I was sure that they were made there and she said "oh ok well we will probably have one then" No idea what BG42 was or about a limited run of Militarys. Not what I expected.
Anyway I am a little torn. I am afraid they may miss the tip coloration as it is only on the last millimeter or so of the tip and just send it back as is. It kills me to have a knife that cost that much with a likely compromised HT.
And I agree the lanyard tube isn't that big of a deal. The blade tip however worries me. Particularly since it is so fine.
Well I am going to sleep on it and decide tomorrow.
If you have any other thoughts please let me know. Thanks for the advice.

Edit- I forgot to add. I tried to take pictures but it is hard to get the light right to show the discoloration.
