Thanks, Patrick. When I bought my Sherline back in 96 or 97, I didn't have the money or the room for a larger mill and could not find a smaller, used US made machine. I will get a larger mill one day but only to complement the Sherline for larger jobs.

I bought the Sherline when I start making autos and the accuracy was unbelievable. I now use in mainly for slotting guards and spacers, 3/16" to 5/16" slots in 1/4" to 1/2" thick steel. I can plunge 3/16" to 1/4" holes in a line and remove the webs in one pass, then using the dial handles to open up the slot to .001" less than my tang for a very good fit. It's always dead on.

Don, you don't know how happy I am to hear that. I am in the same situation as you were back then and got the impression that this mill was too small for this kind of work which is exactly what I need it for. Thanks a bunch. :D

Patrice

PS: Edited to add, aw crap, it's 1000$ in Canada. :(

I've got a copy of a Rong Fu (Chinese copy of a Chinese copy- go figure....) mill drill. It came from Harbor Freight, and only cost me $750. Takes R8 collets, weighs 705 lbs without vise. So far it's been very accurate.

I also have HF mill drill the big bench one and it was around $850 with the stand i think and it is very sturdy.

I've had a taig mill since 2,000 and if it tore up tomorrow I'd order another one tomorrow. I make pocket knives and it can't hog off as much material as a large machine but I can cut .035 long pulls in blades with it. It is also very percise. It seems to be made a little stronger than the sherline, that is just from looks as I haven't used a sherline. I also cut all my nail nicks with the taig mill. Wonderful little machine!!!!!

You can't go wrong with this purchase. The series one Bridgeport is a very sturdy and versatile machine.
This is the model I have in my shop.
