Will this material hurt my bits when milling???
Or should I have one dedicated for these materials??

It is abrasive stuff. I generally use a rougher and a finisher so I get a consistent finish longer. You will want to make sure you have proper ventilation so you don't breathe the dust.

I rough synthetic stuff to dimension a lot on my manual knee mill. Micarta is not as hard as G10, on your cutters. Either way I just use whatever sharp HSS cutter I have laying around. High speed works well, feed can be pretty fast but watch out for the edges. I try to climb mill my way carefully around the part before roughing the center.

i use carbide and keep it wet to keep the dust down. i ll take short cutter life over shorter lung life (that dust gets everywhere )

We use carbide and run wet.

G10 will dull a cutter quickly where it can't be used for anything else.

What cutting fluid do you all use for Micarta? A machinist in the physics lab around work uses Ethanol or Alcohol, and so thats what I have used.

I'm only taking about a 32 of an inch off, just to insure it's flat after thinning my 1/8" material.

But I'll pick up another just to be safe.

Good point about wear from G-10, even for a non machinist. Remember that with G-10, you are milling glass fiber as opposed to some kind of cotton with Micarta.

I've been using my $100 carbide counterbore to drill tons of Ti bearing/pivot recesses... do one in G10 and it is noticeably dull!
