Milling question - Wa bolster

In milling out the slotted hole for a Wa handle in say brass or nickel silver, does it make sense to drill through first with standard bit and then mill out the slot?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Yes, drill out one or two holes and mill out the space between them. A starter path make it easier.
