I'd love to own some full sized equipment in the way of lathe and milling machine but 1- cant afford it yet and 2- dont have a shop with the correct kind of floor. Any way, do any of you use the bench top units such as the wilton? They run about 500.00 to 600.00. Are they worth it?

Rick, I was in the exact situation as you, both 1&2.
After looking around on the net and asking a lot of questions, I purchased this one http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=44991. Keep checking HF for a 20% coupon. They have been offering them a lot lately.
This little mill can be enhanced a lot with some modifications. First, add an angle plate to the column to stiffen it. this really helps when tramming the mill. Then add a belt drive kit. You get much smoother operation and an increase in top speed. Next, add an air piston kit. This gives about 1 1/2" additional travel on the Z axis. The angle plate is a necessity. The others just make it better. All of this can be done for less than $200.
Make sure that the mini mill you purchase uses R8 collets. They are less expensive and more available than others.
As for the lathe, I got lucky. I found a used JET 9X20 for $400. It had more than $300 worth of accessories and tools with it. This in not one I would have purchased new, but I couldn't pass on this deal.

Here's some pics. The second one shows the angle plate.

If you get a mini mill, I will be glad to point you to the places I found to get the best bang for your buck on tooling and accessories.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the good info! A couple of questions... The add-ons that you mention... Are they all HF add-ons? And, what kind of materials are you able to mill with your machine? Can it handle steel? I'm mostly looking to play with guard and handle material but if it can handle it I'm sure some steel will find it's way onto the bed some day if you know what I mean?

Thanks for the info and pics! It looks like a nice little setup.

Thanks again Mike! I really appreciate all the info.

On a side note... Is Grover anywhere near Tryon, NC? For some reason itsounds real familiar.

Dang Mike, that yellow bench top needs about 1/2 an inch of metal chips on it. Might tone it down a bit...

Rick, Tryon is 50/60 mi NNW of Grover.

Nathan, industrial yellow was the only enamel I had. Left over from a job. Besides, I actually clean up after I finish. I know it's weird, but I have never been accused of being normal.

Mike,

I thought it sounded familiar. I must have seen it on a map while researching my ancestry. apparently some of my deepest roots come from your neck of the woods. Maybe some day I'll get back there. It looks beautiful from what I've seen on the web.
