Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works

Hello Sierra912,

I recently traded off a MMHW short sword, called a "Long Knife". It had a 16 inch blade, which was 2 1/2 inches wide.

The sword was very well made, but it was also very heavy. I do not know the weight because the weight is not listed (last I checked) on the MMHW website. However, it felt much heavier than a 20 inch bladed sword I own. I think the high weight is due to the 2 1/2 inch width of the blade.

You might want to email Mr. Frizzell or Mr. Gonzales and ask the weight, unless you don't mind a heavy blade. I am small statured and it was too much for me. I ended up trading it for a Smith and Wesson M1917 .45 revolver, which I think was a good trade since those pistols are highly sought after collectors' items. The man who I traded the sword to was a huge fellow - one of the biggest guys I have ever seen. He probably didn't think it was so heavy.

Thanks. I'll contact MMHW.

Great trade! They are only tools and if a tool doesn't work right for you...get one that does:)

I concur with your weight thought process. That is wide for such a short blade and hence the additional weight. A sword, like a knife or hatchet, must feel "right" when you pick it up. Or you won't carry it after a very short time and you certainly won't train with it:(

Again, appreciate your time. I'll let you know what I do.:D

Hello Again Sierra912,

If you don't find a MMHW short sword to your liking, I will mention that I have a Phillipine made sword from Kris Cutlery that has a 20 inch blade, moderate weight, and seems to be very well-made, although probably not as rugged as the MMHW products. I purchased mine through Bladeart, although they can be ordered directly from Kris Cutlery. Kris Cutlery prices are low, but the brand is well regarded by sword enthusiasts. I have noticed that the Kris swords are the ones most often recommended to those who cannot afford expensive custom swords.

The MMHW swords are no doubt superior, but if you do not find a style you like at MMHW then check out the Kris Cutlery brand. You might also want to check out the sword forum websites to see what else is available and recommended.
