Mineral oil is always good. If the wood is dry, rub on a light coat and let it soak in, then do it again the next day. Keep doing it until you have surface residue that won't soak in, rub that off, and you'll be fine for a long time.
Actually, that is neat little spider. It is a male Purseweb, that I found this summer and and had to get a pic since it was the first one I've ever seen. Spiders only bite when then feel trapped or when they are hurt.
