Mineral oil to oil the joints?

Thanks for the info. I was just about to start a thread on taking care of stag. Sounds like the best care is not to do anything.

One of the questions that I always wonder about, and maybe you guys can help me with, is what kind of protectant would stay on the longest? Reason is that I may go days without using my knife, but I still want it to be protected from sweat, etc.

There are two types of mineral oil

The stuff you buy in the pharmacy for constipation, it is much thicker and is good for long time storage.

Baby oil is much thinner and works better for oiling the joints

A mineral oil I like very much is Starrett. Made for their machinist tools which are amongst the best, and the steels used are similar to many used in knives.

A lot of people recommend "camelia" oil also.

Renaissance wax is great stuff and I use it on just about anything I want to preserve, metal, stone, stag, leather...

The primary ingredient in Ballistol is food-grade mineral oil. The stuff works very well for all knife CLP purposes and it is nontoxic. I suspect that "straight" food-grade mineral oil should work almost as well.
