Turbo...Nice collection and photo. Can't quite see end of haft on bottom right. Any information on that. She's very pleasing on the eye.

regards...Frank

i have several other hatchets, but these are the smallest.

except i have a small 'mini' that my greatuncle gave me that he got while in korea during the war over their, but im not done restoring it yet so i didnt include it in the pics...

Bearhunter...Love the look of your Duck hatchet, with the rounded face and poll. Is the haft of the DB different timber or just stained that colour. It looks good.
What I like about your axes is they looked used and respected.
For the photo are they standing on one of those seats with a lift up lid? I also like the look of that dark tongue and groove they are on.

thanks frank!
the haft on the DB is made from cocobolo wood (i bought it from an old fellow in washington state, its custom made)
yes, its a seat/storage area, we keep our years supply of dog food in it. we live off grid in the mountains/woods in a cabin. all of our walls are tougue and groove like that. the bench was made from some of the left over pieces... the bench seat is dark like that because its dirty:D
i do projects and stuff on it during the winter when it gets cold out. my 'shop' is in my open wood shed, so i work on stuff inside the cabin at times...;)

nice stuff bearhunter. I never can get one of the old Keen Kutter or Shapleigh's but I will just keep on keepin' on. I really like your sheaths.

This is a cool little axe that belongs to a friend of mine and was made by Ron Newton M.S. :)

I've got the tiny Vaughan and an old Tru-Test the same size. They carry like nothing, do a lot of work, and don't scare a soul.

Has anybody tried an old time lathing hatchet or produce hatchet as a woods axelet?

Vaughan Sportman's Axe. 8 oz, 10" long, 2 1/4" blade. It's extremely sharp after lots of filing, emery cloth, and some wet rock time. But a long ways to go with sanding.

Mini axes, small hatchets, pocket axes, call them what you will. Thought I would share a few with you all. Post up some of your favorites.

The double bit is a Collins that I picked up on the on-line auction site. It came in good condition, cleaned up well, and to my pleasant surprise, has an original handle. At the time I bought it, I had planned on putting it to use. However, given the condition and the handle, I have been unable to bring myself to use it.

The three in a row are an old Craftsman, GB Mini, and Bark River mini. I should have included something for scale, but many of you are familiar with the GB mini. These are tiny and light. The handles are around 10'' each. The Bark River has an incredible profile and is extremely thin. By comparison, a GB Wildlife Hatchet seems like a man's tool.

Is the Bark River one of their reworked Wetterlings? If so what do you think of it? I've been eyeballing them.

Bark River did rework some Wetterlings, but the mini is a reworked Vaughan. They have not made the mini's in years. Here is a link where Mike describes the process http://http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?6689-Bark-River-(I-think)-mini-axe

My understanding, and I may well be wrong, is that Vaughan noticed the BR mini axes and began making their Sportsman axes thinner. The result was that Mike Stewart, at BR, thought the thinner version did not allow for enough rework for it to be as effective. Sadly, the BR mini is no longer available.

No minis here, but I gave my hubby a GB mini last year. He had been wanting one and the price was right, under $50 plus shipping for a new one. The retailer made a $100 mistake.
