heres what I do with the mini bics I EDC. First of all, I try to make them waterproof. Here's how.

1. A take piece of wax paper, and roll it around the lighter. Around this tube, I wrap duct tape to reinforce it. Then I fold one end, wrap ducttape around it to seal out water, and then fold the other end and wrap that.

Now, lighters don't work in the extreme cold, but are good for just about anytime else.

To test my idea, I swam down the Muskegon River in Michigan, Got the the campsite along the river, dripping wet, completely soaked. Took the lighter out of my pocket, wiped excess water on the crass and leaves, took my Kabar dozier folding hunter, and cut off one of the ends of the ducttape/wax paper tube, squeezed the lighter out, and lit the ducttape/wax paper tube. Ducttape and wax paper burn really good, got my fire going and warmed my bones after being in 49 degree water. :)

These are cheap to put together.

Another option is to keep one in a pill bottle with some tinder. I got a mini Bic, 6 standard strike-anywhere matches, 2 "no blow out" joke candles and 6 Tinder Quick tabs in a tall-ish pill bottle for a total weight of 0.7oz. And it doesn't rattle :)

Scott, that sounds great for a lighter to go into your PSK, but I use mine more frequently than that, even if only to light a candle on my table or to warm the tip of a stubborn ball point pen. Like a knife, mine stays in my pants pocket ready to use. And, no, I don't smoke.

Now this will make somebody mad probably, but I can't believe people want or need pictures of and "tutorials" on how to wrap waxed paper and duct tape around a little butane lighter. Someone with no more imagination or creativity than that would be lucky to survive a picnic if faced with five hungry ants. Scott just gave us very precise directions on how he prepared his lighter. What do you not understand about that procedure?

heheh-- I was considering asking for AutoCad drawings and a 40 page PDF manual  Maybe Scott can run clinics for pay :)

Thanks, Dale. I guess I'm not alone in my astonishment. :D

Give 'em time, though. The Walking Clueless will attack me!

That's okay, we'll just add a few more sections for Common Sense 099. We can stand outside the classroom for "How to Take a Sh** in the Woods" and make fun of the people who come out with toilet paper stuck to their shoes :D

Scottman, great idea, thanks for the tip!

DaleW and Dr. Mudd. . . Your remarks are very insensitive and funny as he**!!!!

I'm going to run along now and dig a foxhole and take cover before the sh*t starts flying. . .

LOL.

I also do the lighter in pill container idea.

I EDC my ductape/wax paper wrapped lighter because I doesn't look obvious as survival gear. One time I took it out and no one had a clue what it was. Lower profile is good for when you are around people. It is for emergencies. When camping/hiking I have my frensel lense, my flint, tinder in pill bottles, and another bic, the bigger one for standard firelighting duties.

Even if I carry a big bic, I still have this one JIC (just in case). It survives drowning. :)

Kindling, and lighter in one low profile package! Got to love it!:)

Enjoy your humor Dr. Mudd but some people are more visual than others. Plus personally I like looking at all the great pics posted on this forum. I know some of the smartest people who can look at something and build it just like that...others need written word...and yet others need spoken word. When teaching children as I do, one must find many methods to help a person learn. No harm no foul :-)

I think everyone likes pics regardless of how simple the implied task is.

Great idea though, especially the tinder part. I find that a soaked lighter will still work after a bit of working the wheel, but dry tinder is always good to have on hand

Well bailes you got me thinking. Tinder is stuff that will light from a spark. Kindling is stuff that will take an open flame. The waxpaper/ducttape is kindling in my book. But why not add tinder to this setup?

In the Waxpaper/ducttape wrapped bic lighter, I could fit a small pinch of tinder in the ends where it's empty space. Thanks for making my brain work.

Also, I noticed that a small 1-2 inch piece of surgical tubing, like the kind from a worn down sling shot, will burn great when it gets lit. Smells though. :)

As a side note, tinder probably will catch from just the sparking wheel on the lighter, giving you a little more insurance. The spark wheel is probably very reliable when kept dry. Hence the ductape/wax paper wrapping.

Even if somehow the gas part isn't working, that stored tinder might come in handy..

But, always carry more than 2 ways to start a fire. :)
