Feel free to let me know how this looks so far. I have the basic shape and have it sanded out but I see scratches so I am going to have to take it down a few grits.
I am thinking of a 1/4" copper guard as that is pretty much all the metal I have laying around right now and a simple wood handle to finish it off. This is the first guard I will be making so I am shooting for simple.
Yes, this is a file knife. I am waiting on some 1084 from NJSB.

Shape looks nice. My input would be for the future. I can't tell exact dimensions from the picture but I don't think the shoulders need to be that deep. 3/16-1/4" is plenty to seat the guard and would leave more strength in that area.
 
I agree, the shoulders ended up like that because I followed the contours of the file tail. I probably should have cut it off and just started fresh. Thanks for the input.
