Well... whattaya think?

Same material sizes but with a 3.25" blade and a flat grind :)

Colored G-10 scales too :D

The Chinook is one of my favorite blades, custom or production, and I would absolutely love to have a mini version of it.

Mmm... I'd be interested in a mini version, but the one I'd want would be a bit different than yours. I'd want a three inch blade, for legality reasons. I think changing it to a flat grind would hurt the aesthetics (which is personal taste, of course), and so would changing the color of the scales (I actually like black).

The current Chinook has a 3 3/4" blade. Would it make economic sense for Spyderco to build a Chinook with a blade only 1/2" shorter when building it with the blade shortened by 3/4" or a wee tad more would make it legal in many more jurisdictions where it is not now legal or would not be legal with a 3 1/4" blade. I would urge Sal to consider a Chinook Jr. with a blade 3" long or slightly less.

I could go for a 3" blade as well. But keep in mind, there is a huge difference between 3.75" and 3.25" on the scale of an entire knife, so legalities aside I would say yes it does make sense.

Pull out a current Chinook and set it next to almost any knife with a 3.25" blade and you'll see what I mean.

As a person living in the relatively free state of Ohio I don't worry much about length restrictions so I wasn't thinking of it from a legal standpoint.

Sharpbits, everyone is allowed to search, I felt this was a topic worth keeping in front of Sal and crew because this is an awesome design and should be expanded on. And the Blackhawk, as nice as it is, is not nearly as stout as a Chinook or as well implemented IMO.

Basically, I'm flexible to the design idea, just threw down my wish list.

At the moment, basic members such as myself are not allowed to search. Been like that for a couple days, maybe a week.

My bad, but that's weird, has anyone checked the "Service and Support" section to see if something is wrong?

I don't recall that being part of the premium membership plan.

Read Spark's post at the top of each forum.

No offence, but funny that those announcements are never read. There were like 3 threads about the search engine on the knife community forum or something.
IMO as long as the mini-chinook is still bank vault like after the shrink, it's all fine with me. I'll take a PE.

I guess I'm alittle weird, as I'd like to have a Chinook with a LONGER blade...Say, 5 inches long. I'd also like to have a Chinook that is alittle more "lefty-friendly" like the FRN Endura/Delica, with a clip that can be moved to the "other scale".

A Chinook with a 3 in blade, a flat grind, and colored handles is a Lil Temperance!
Matt

I'd go for a 5 inch Chinook, and a 3 inch, and a 3.25 inch...

Priority on the 5 inch please.

Pachucks

I'd like to see the current model re-done with a compression lock.

That depends upon which Li'l Temperance you are talking about. I have the leafpoint version as I just could not cotto to the extreme false edge on the other one. I would never stop worrying over whether the point would break off. But I would think that a 3" Chinook would not have so extreme a point on it.

I'm just not crazy about the extreme contouring of the G-10 on the Temperance. I like the blocky, beefy feel of the Chinook and the MBC lock back a lot better as well.

Dan,

I'm with you on the 5" bladed Chinook. It's just big enough now for my taste, and bigger would be tremendous!

While the Chinook is the topic of discussion; does anyone know about the status of the "updated" version? I remember awhile back Sal describing some subtle design changes and also an attendant change to VG-10 blade steel. At least I think I remember that...

Jeff/1911.

Found it!
Clipped from Sal's post:
"Interesting points of view, thanx for the input.

G-10 does have more traction than FRN to be sure. There are no plans for an FRN Chinook at this time. We do have a design revision that is lighter (by 2 oz), but we're a little behind on the protos and we'd like James to play with it for a while before we take it any farther.

We probably wouldn't begin a design for a smaller one until we satisfied that we've refined the pattern to serve all needs and eliminate complaints.

There is a demand for a Spyderco folding Bowie and the Keating design works well. In addition, James is one of those guys that is always improving the design, (CQI) so We'll see refinements for a while.

I will say that it's possible, but not in the next year.
