Mini Chinook?

SB,

Thanks for looking that up for me...I also seem to recall his mentioning a possible change to VG-10.

I'm unable to search for it at the moment, due to us being put on restricted service.

We just got the latest proto back from James with his comments. We'll be making one more prototype and then we'll engineer for production. Plan is for early '03 intro.

As mentioned, 1/2" in blade length makes a big difference in the size of a knife.

If the new larger Keating Bowie is successful, then a smaller one would certainly be in consideration. 3.25" (82mm) would be ideal as it would permit greater ergonomics in the handle. 3" (76mm) has the advantage of being legal in most areas.

soooo.....What would be your preference (3" or 3.25" - 76mm or 82mm) and what would be the reasons for each?

We would probably stay with the lock back and the hollow grind to also serve the hunting market and the more conservative folding Bowie market.

Hi Sal, sounds great to me and thanks for replying with an update :)

I still maintain a 3.25" blade is best for me personally. I have found that it's the best size for giving me great cutting power as well as a smaller package that's more people friendly.

Bigger blades occasionally leave me wanting something more accurate for lighter work, while smaller blades often leave me cutting to much or working harder than I should have to in order to do the task at hand.

Like I said previously, I live in a state where folder size is not really an issue so that's not a concern of mine.

And please, keep the lock back as mentioned. It's still my favorite locking method and the lock on the current Chinook is very hard to beat by anyone.

Sal,

So, the "new" Chinook will have a blade of 4&1/4 inches long? Will it also be more "lefty-friendly" (like the FRN Delica/Endura), with a clip that can be moved to the other scale?

Sal,

I would say, stick with 3.25".

3" is getting a bit small. I'm not sure how well it would translate. Although, if anyone could make it work, it would be Spyderco.

On a side note, I can't believe you're considering a larger chinook.

Holy cow. That's going to be one awesome knife. Just when I thought Spyderco was going to concentrate on smaller folders...

Sal, I know that all of these Spydie fans love 3.25" blades, but there are an awful lot of us out here who have to live with 3" maximum blade laws, I know for I am one of them, working in Washington, DC. I would find a 3" Chinook a joy to add to my EDC rotation. It would certainly be a solid worker.

Absolutely. The ergonomics might be an issue, but I certainly have faith in you fellows.
