here is another one of these, only with a little wider blade!

Im calling this one a mini-chopper/pack knife. the day I forged this one, my big forge was giving me fits, and instead of forging full sized choppers, this was the biggest I could get out of my little forge. hence the mini-chopper name!

this one was forged out of a leaf spring from my friends ranch, have no idea what vehicle it came off of, but he said they quit adding to that pile a few decades ago. knives ive forged from these springs have cut very well.

OAL- 14 1/2"

blade- 9 1/2" long, .225" thick, 1 3/4" wide

steel- leaf spring, Forged, with in-house differential heat treatment which includes double normalize, double anneal, double edge quench, and triple draw, for a great performing blade, that holds a great edge, and yet is easy to sharpen!

grind- a flat grind, with a slight tip to butt taper, sharpened on a smiths diamond hone with micro bevels, to an agressive razor edge

finish- hammer finish, with a 120 grit handsanded finish on the bevels, for a rough, easy to maintain working finish

handle- leather slabs, wrapped in jute cord, and soaked in epoxy

guard- no guard on this one, but the handle is contoured to steer your hand away from the cutting edge

sheath- 11oz leather, hand stitched, clean, hot-waxed, loop is sized for a 2" belt. personally I keep a blade like this one strapped to my pack instead of on my belt

I did not test the blade for rope cutting, I did cut a 2x4 in half twice, and the edge would still shave. it also passed an edge flex test, and a nail test {where you clamp the blade edge up in a vise and place a common nail across the edge and hammer the nail until it is cut halfway through} and put about half my wieght {210 lbs}to flex the blade sideways in a vise to check for toughness.

What a lot of knife for $150 ! And add in the sheath, -- Joe your sheaths are with the best of any knifemaker. This big sheath alone is worth at least $100.
If anyone thinks i might be exaggerating, buy this knife and then post back here what you think about both the knife and the sheath.
I have the first one of these Joe posted and it is ridiculously awesome and i have a bunch of high end choppers to compare to.

Mink, i hope you post back here after you get this knife. Likely you will feel that you got more for your dollar than any other knife purchase. But really, money aside, mine is simply a great chopper in a superb sheath and yours will be every bit as good, maybe even better, although i don't see how, but Joe is always tweaking for better.
This is just my pure enthusiasm. There are no 'kickbacks' involved.

Roland, I was very happy with my first purchase from Joe. I see no reason that this will be any different. This will get put to immediate use trimming trees around my place.

We'll It looks I got on here a bit late. Please let me know if you find yourself making another mini/big chopper.

i got one of these coming soon too. I go into the woods for a bit in about 8 days as I get a small vacation. Ill try to take video of me destroying plants and wildlife for you guys.

Chopper arrived today, and color me impressed as always where Joe's work is concerned. I'll have to get her out when the rain stops to try her out, though I suspect I may have to order a bit bigger one from you Joe. Loved the look of that "extreme" you had up earlier. Thanks again.

Rain let up so took her for a spin clearing some low hanging limbs on some pines. She works very well, the balance is right, and the thickness of the blade adds enough weight that she just "flicks" through smaller limbs. I said I was impressed earlier, and that has not changed....Thanks Joe.

Mink, now that you tried it out, are you still going for the bigger one ?
I really like mine. Never thought about asking Joe for the bigger size as well, but maybe i should ?

Im glad you like her mink!!

those minichoppers are nice to strap to a pack as they are nice and small and light!

I never kept a record on the minichoppers, but so far my record with a full sized one that I keep in the truck is a 5" diameter cottonwood limb with one blow.

to be fair everything was perfect for that cut. it was spring so the sap was running, the branch had a load of snow on it so there was a preload on the branch. I hit the limb at just the right angle with the grain, I put just the right amount of draw into the cut, and I do have a pretty good arm. the blade just sailed through that limb almost as if it wasnt there. that cut happened several years ago, yet it was so perfect that i remember it like it was yesterday!

Roland, yes I will be talking to Joe about a larger one. This one will probably get strapped to my BOB in the trunk of my car.

Joe, specifically thinking along the lines of that Extreme Chopper you made but in black canvas micarta.
