Mini Commander Problem

The black coating takes longer to break in and even if you're the third owner it's hard to tell if the previous owners used it or broke it in. Some people buy knives and put them in a drawer. The coating is either cerakote or teflon and the detent ball needs to wear a nice groove into the blade. The squeaking is probably the ball rubbing on some rough spots on the blade. Over time it will smooth out and the squeak will go away. Glad we are taking care of you either way.

My smoothest Emerson is a black coated knife. At first, it squeaked really bad and had a very rough pivot and sticky lock. Several days of opening and closing, and one good disassembly cleaning at the end and the difference was night and day. It was worth the effort to break it in! It was strange though, it was very rough up until the disassembly, then afterwords like a different knife - it's extremely smooth and makes no noise and the lock does not stick at all with a perfect early (but full engagement) lockup.
