Mini Dejavoo with a crap lock

I have a BM740 that I have been very happy with, you just have to accept that it is not a heavy duty knife. No liner lock is going to provide strong blade retention nor provide the firmest lock up. The emphasis with the Dejavoo is minimizing weight; providing a good sized knife at a very low weight, and I think it does a very good job of it. Refering to it as a gentleman's knife is a good way to put it, this is a full sized knife that could easily be carried with slacks, thanks to the low weight and fold-over deep carry clip. If you want a hard use knife, look for a lock-back or Axis lock. My $0.02.

Most liner locks are not as dependable compared to other types of locks. But, if your talking about a spyderco liner lock, thats a different story.

+1 on the Gents knife comments.

From the first time I handled (and purchased lol) a full size Voo, to the current Mini-Voo I carry, they have always stuck me as somewhat, hmm, delicate. Though I love to carry it, smooth as can be and doesn't scare anyone when I open it. But at the same time, I always have something with a little more ummphh close at hand (lately an older Endura or a LFTi) in case I actually need a KNIFE :D

I had a Mini Deju Vue and I liked the knife a lot. Very nice sharp thin edge and felt nice in the hand but I could flip it open wth a LIGHT flip of my wrist. Every other Mini Deja was the same. Extremely weak ball detent and I would not trust this knife in my pocket. Too bad as it is a nice design.

I bought one, thinking "LUM and BM know what they are doing, right?"

Except that the liner would easily move under the slightest pressure from your grip towards the unlocked position.

It would move just enough so you thought it was locked but BAM! Nope, it wasn't, hope you weren't too attached to those fingers of yours, buddy!

I won't trash BM, but I will NEVER buy another knife from them again.

Test yours. Check the lockup without gripping it. Should be pretty solid. Now grip the knife like you are using it to carve some wood or cut some rope. Wiggle the blade up and down, check the lockup, now look at how little the liner is engaging the blade. Scary.

STR suggests with the knife open see if you can close it with a steady pressure on back of the blade but keep your fingers out of the way. The Mini Dejavoo should have never made to market with that bad a lock up/ball detent. Most of BM's liner locks were good but in the last few years you need to be careful. Btw, I love the Axis lock.

The problem is that the lockup seems OK when your fingers are out of the way.

Test it like that, it seems great.

Grip it like you are using it, then take a look-see.

The simple act of using the knife in its intended manner can cause it to fail.

Interesting. I would never trust any mechanical device completely. But, maybe you got a good one. Should keep an eye on it though.

An ounce of prevention could prevent a couple of messed up fingers.
