I like the slight texture of the scales on the Mini-Dyad. What type of micarta are they made of? I know there are different types such as linen and paper, but I haven't seen the differences between each described anywhere.

Also, are there any other Spyderco's that have micarta scales and dual steel liners? The metal liners of the Mini Dyad give it a classy look and a nice heft to it. I have a Calypso Jr. and think it's a great design but I prefer a knife that has a little more weight in the hand and a more secure feel to it. Unfortunately, there are no good Spyderco dealers in my area so I have to rely on internet pictures and descriptions for my information.

Alan - Linen and paper micarta differ in the material that the resins are mixed with. Paper is generally considered prettier by most, although linen is stronger.

We only make a few micarta models. Although knife aficianados generally appreciate micarta, the general marketplace is less appreciative. We like to use it as a predecessor to a potential lightweight or in a custom collaboration design. Most won't have liners. If the Micarta is linen and thick enough, and the proper screws are used, Micarta will hold a clip quite nicely. Examples of this are the original Goddard, Calypso & Calypso jr. I think the new JD Smith model (out in summer) would be a micarta lined lockback you might look into.

The Dyad Jr (formerly Mini Dyad) is actually scheduled to be lightweight with no clip by year end. A "throw in the pocket" piece with a total of 4" of cutting edge in a very small lightweight package. Shortly after it comes out, we will most likely discontinue the current Dyad Jr. (occassional batches are always possible). Hope that helps

Just got a Mini/jr Dyad on the advice of Danelle, following the comments in the plain or serrated thread I started. Well, this is a sweet little knife! I was astounded by its small size and ability to cut like a much bigger blade. Alot of cutting area! I personally enjoy the clip, but its small enough to pocket well. Now I have both blades in one knife..This is my first exper. with ats-55...Thanks to Danelle for suggesting it to me.

Sal,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll keep an eye out for that JD Smith model. Although the blade length of that model might be a little too big for me.

As for the Dyad Jr., I think it was a good idea to leave the clip off of the new model. I took the clip off of mine and carry it my pocket. The knife seemed a little too short to be carried on a clip without falling out easily. In any case, its a great knife.
