I'm a fan of 154CM for basic utility tasks. I'm considering my first Benchmade (believe it or not) and the Mini Griptilian 556 seems like it will fit a gap in my EDC rotation. For those who use the 556, how does the steel hold up?

What should I consider regarding other models and steel? Lightweight, EDC, utility reliability are my three key criteria for a knife in this category. I carry a PM2, as a category comparison.

It holds up fine, I never had an issue with 154cm in any way. 154cm is highly corrosion resistant and holds an edge really well. The mini grip is very durable since it has full liners, the full size grip only has partial liners but still holds up well.

I started collecting knives just over 20 years ago. At that time ATS34 and AUS8 were common and 154CM was considered a premium knife steel.

I've owned plenty of 154CM blades over the years and still have a few. It's very corrosion-resistant. It's easy to sharpen and holds its edge well enough. No issues whatsoever.

This one's been through the ringer and still gets along just fine. 154cm is my favorite steel and the Mini-Grip is a wonderful knife. You won't be disappointed.

I've only had my mini for a couple months, but I really like that little knife. As far as the steel, works ok for me. I just got my deep carry clips in the mail and I'm now good to go.

I see a wide variety of different colored scales for the Mini Grip (even in this thread). Are these factory offerings or is there a big aftermarket for Mini Grip scales?

Also, I see the 555HG has the "Spyderco" opening hole. How is the Sheepsfoot version of the Mini Grip?

As far as scales, both. Especially if you're after the FRN models. The G10 from BM is more limited. There are a fair amount of aftermarket scales for the grip and mini-grip as it's a very popular knife, for good reason.

154cm is "a great all around blade steel" per benchmade. Benchmade also has a new custom knife builder dealy for the grip family and barrage family knives so you can get something built to your liking. It is a pretty interesting web tool, IMO. In the tool, it explains the different steels from BM's perspective and a generalized choice of what they would be used for.

I have the 555hg and love it. A great light utility knife.
BM does a fantastic job with their 154 cm steel, easy to sharpen and easy to maintain.
Can't really say enough for the hollow grind on that knife.

The 557 tanto is quickly growing on me. It's been awhile since I had a tanto knife, and I do like the rugged versatility. Things like opening a dog or cat food can (those tricky aluminum tabs) and such. You can jimmy the tanto in there and not worry like you might with a drop point or similar.

I took my Ritter mini grip for a motorcycle ride today(dedicated bike knife), and I absolutely love the platform. I really don't mind the Valox handle at all on the mini, I don't like it on the full size grips though.

The awesome thing about the mini is it really is all you need in an EDC knife. It packs a lot of cutting power in a small package, and I know I'd never, ever, ever get rid of my Ritter.

I can echo most of what everyone else is stating. 154CM is nice steel and you should not have a problem with it.

I was planning to get a small Grip but found a used large with a busted tip for $20 bucks. I have never looked back.
Now I pick up a small and it just seems way to tiny.

I ordered both the full size and Mini. I was convinced on the Mini until I saw a "flip video" on a website (Knife Center I think) and the Mini looks pretty mini indeed. I won't know until I handle but I'm eager to get a feel for both.
