Mini Grip in 154CM

I received the 553 in satin 154CM today. It's as nice as the Mini Grip but definitely feels like "more knife-" the unit I received is extremely sturdy with no extra play in the action whatsoever (neither did the Mini). It definitely carries "bigger" due to the overall dimensions and especially the width of the handles.

As I mentioned in another thread here today, I'm trying to narrow down my decision between the PM2, Mini, and full size Grip as the companion to my Yojimbo 2. The problem is, after handling both Benchmades, I don't know how I'm going to get rid of either! It's way too easy to rationalize the Mini for business travel (discreet, tiny, black/olive color)... dammit. I think I'm keeping them both. ;)

154 is great steel especially in a small pocket edc knife. It's really good. Very Rust resistant, economically affordable, tough, fairly easy to sharpen etc..etc..... great edc steel

You've made the right decision. And, if you don't know which to carry the mini makes a great rear pocket "back-up" in case... I was going to add an excuse here but on further thought there's no reason not to carry another knife just because you want to.

Not sure how much you travel but one of the primary reasons I ended up with a mini-grip in the first place was 3" knife laws where I work.

Great comments- thank you for adding another justification! In all seriousness, your statement about carrying "another knife just because you want to" is actually quite sensible. Knife folks should carry what we want, both for functionality and because we want to. It's a similar feeling to taking cool things to school as a kid- the cool feeling was reason enough.

I rarely concern myself with the knife laws where I travel but I suppose that's in part because I think my EDC knives all fall within the legal bounds (no folders over 4-inches). Plus, I don't "flash my steel," so unless I need it, nobody is going to see it. I was sure I was going to return the Mini Grip, but now I think it fits a great "gap" in my EDC arsenal. It's a highly pragmatic, well-constructed back up capable of all sorts of functionality. It's light, easily concealable, and is good for pocket or clip carry.

Good decision! I used to take a SAK but didn't need tools, then took my mini....ahhhhhh! :(
Sticking with the mini Grip for now, the waiter can open my wine...
