hole or thumbstud and why?

does either one cut better, either one easier to deploy things like that and pictures are welcomed

I have both and favor the 555 hole because of it's hollow ground blade is a better slicer. The 556 stud has a better blade shape for penetration.

One additional advantage that I have found with the hole, is that you can use the entire blade for cutting and not have to worry about fouling the studs.

Thanks guys and I didn't even think about that A.P.F. I wanna order a custom one from benchmade with a s30v sheepsfoot blade, I think it's gonna be awesome

I prefer the thumb stud because the hollow grind on the model with the hole is not as durable of an edge. The model with the hole "HG" is going to be a good slicer, but with less edge durability as the drop point model. Depending on the work done, the hollow grind may or may not be a plus for the user. I am also not a fan of the tip on the sheepsfoot. It is strong, but I find it hard to do certain tip-work. (Many people really like it, so it's really preference and what one is using it for that determine the pros/cons.)

With that said, I am a nut about how much I love the Ritter Griptilian as I think it is one of the best blades ever and a big improvement over the already excellent standard Grip. It's high flat grind is both excellent at slicing and handling heavy duty work, and it also has a very strong tip. I think it's the blade that is capable anywhere, with anything. It's standard in S30V. With the price of customizing, a S30V Ritter may be actually less expensive.

Both styles are easy to open...and with AXIS, many people actually do not even use the stud/hole but the AXIS and inertia.

Also potentially easier sharpening. Having said that, I prefer either the standard MDP blade or the Ritter blade to the hole/sheepsfoot blade. :o

It will come with a flat ground blade, just something to think about.

atony that actually increases the interest for me, thank you for the info, and for everyone else i just have never warmed up to the ritter blade shape its just not for me

Hole for easy deployment, cutting and sharpening.
I also prefer the hollow grind for slicing.

my other question is that is it worth it for a custom one, such as having the s30v on a mini grip really excites me but how do they compare in terms such as fit and finish and operation compared to the production models

I have probably ordered 5 or 6 through Benchmade and all have been centered with no play. There is a online dealer that has a bunch of the custom grips in S30V.

I have a Mini Bonecutter with a hole and D2 steel.

With a Contigo clip.. It is perfect

Just an FYI, there is a company from our friends up north that still have some Grips, both sizes, in S30 with various scale colors, if that's what your after. Bit better pricing than the custom shop. If you're interested, pm me and I can give you the link.

I've purchased a couple from there with different scale colors and blade coatings in S30v. But truth be told, in a blindfold test, I'd be hard pressed to know the difference between 154CM & S30v. :)

I don't want to violate forum policy concerning the posting of links in the thread. Thanks! Joe

The small Bone Collector in D2 is a kick butt knife. Grab one while you still can. The latest incarnation in the Hunt series just doesn't seem right to me, although I guess you could call the blade steel an upgrade, but their D2 is good stuff. Their new G10 handle in the gray/black looks odd to me. Not as nice as the Bone Collector. IMHO anyways.

I should point out though, the new small Summit series with the clip removed makes a nice pocket knife. Although with those too, the older BC model in D2 is great as well. Personal tastes I guess. ;)
