Mini Grip

Maybe it's something unique to the sheepsfoot blade then? I think that's pretty much the way I used to close my mini grip, but I had the Doug Ritter version. I'd go test it now, but sadly I sold it :(
 
I have my classic drop point on me now. I don't really scratch my palm when closing it, but when playing with my wife's knife, it's possible.
 
Definitely left-handed operation. My hands are small, but I can certainly see how it could happen. I was trying to figure it out this morning - makes perfect sense.
