I know TOPS doesn't have a very good following on this forum but I thought you still might like to see this.
I figure a smaller version of the Harpoon should be even better to tuck away in a PSK as a little back up blade or frog gig etc and due to it being smaller it should be a good few bucks cheaper !!!

Me want. Want now. You know, I even asked Peter Atwood if he wanted to make mini-harpoons (he doesn't). This is good, very good.

Looks good but I wish it were thinner stock.

oooh... that looks nice.... i like the smaller version... i just love the design of those harpoons... it makes a lot of sense to carry one in the backcountry.... :D

i own one of standard models... :D i love it.... i scored a few a while back, through a group buy (on KF)... i don't think i would have payed full price otherwise, they're a bit too expensive...

i actually just made a new leather sheath for mine.... it fits perfectly into the leg pockets of my carharts or can also be worn as a necker... i should try and get some pics up soon....:)

here's a crappy pic... john t wylie drop point, gene ingram #30, and the tops hoffman harpoon....

If I recall correctly, Skunkwerx made a harpoon blank for Rescue Mike to finish several months ago. Hmm, neither of them are around here very much anymore . . . Maybe they're starting to produce them!

Pitdog, That thing would be easy to make. Not much to it. I have plenty of 1095 and spray on bedliner.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Other than being small and easy to stash, and kind of neat looking I'll admit, what's this thing good for? It doesn't look like you can get any kind of grip on it (even with the wrap) so it looks like it's just going to want to roll in your hand under any kind of real pressure. If someone who has one can tell me how I'm wrong, please do so, because I really do kind of like it in some weird way but it just doesn't look very usable.

I'm guessing the point is to lash it to a rod or stick and use it as a throwing or thrusting harpoon.

I like that better actually than the original. I like the blade to handle ratio better. I have always wanted to add one to my gear, maybe I'll finally get one now.

I've been asking around about making small harpoons for PSK's. I'm all ears to anyone what wants to knock some out. Stainless would be better, IMHO.

As someone else mentioned, it could be thinner stock. I would like to see something with a good flat end that could be mated up with a flat carved in the stick you are using for a shaft and good surface area for lashing. The blanks could be cut with computer controlled equipment and the grinding needed would be really basic and quick to do.

What would you possibly use that for? I think I would rather have a regular knife and whittle a spear if I need to. Chris

I heard they were using them at the 'Practice what you preach ' gathering and found them quite usefull !

terrill hoffman the man behind PWYP, is also the man behind the harpoon... he's a great guy....

Curious looking thing. For the money I'd rather get a few fishing arrow heads, and modify them so they could be attached to a stick. Seriously, how often are you gonna run into something big enough to harpoon? It's cool ,but it's not practical for most people.
