Mini Harpoon !!!

Okay, you guys got me inspired. I went to my projects box and got out a Henkels stainless steel kitchen knife with a molded plastic handle. I got it at Goodwill for 99 cents, so we're off to a good start.

It was kind of like this one when I started:

I ground on the handle until I exposed the tang and got it fee. I took it to the belt sander and cut in from the sharp side to form the harpoon point and sharpened up both sides of the tip. I made some notches in the bottom to help hold lashing line and buffed them to take the sharpness out of the edges. That hook on the bottom is the factory tang. I finished up the edge on the Sharpmaker and it's done. The factory plastic slip sheath is fine for a PSK.

The finished "hpoon" is 6-1/4" long, stainless and weighs 0.4oz.

Looks like a modern and thicker version of the old Marbles Bird & Trout knife with out the finger ring. I like it. Damn just what I need another knife on my gotta have list LOL :D

not bad dale.... that came out great...

Dannyboy Leather- I used to bowfish when I was younger for tilapia and gar, those points will work with enough "push" behind them.

DaleW- Gonna have to try that.

Does anyone have a link for how to do that wrap? I can't get my mind around it looking at the photos. Mac

You could get by with any little kitchen knife. You know, I'm kind of surprised that Cold Steel or CRKT hasn't done something like this.

If I recall correctly, Skunkwerx made a harpoon blank for Rescue Mike to finish several months ago. Hmm, neither of them are around here very much anymore . . . Maybe they're starting to produce them!

Still here, just don't post much in the WSS forum as I used to.. We got a new baby crawling around the house, makes it tough!

Here is what we called the Faux-Poon when I received it..

Here is a closer view half way through the grinding..

I added an Okuden kydex necker sheath for it, and added it to my kit!

Just like a square knot with the knife in the middle-- overhand on each side, alternating as you would with a square knot, back and forth and the same direction of twist on the same side.

Yes, I sure agree. I, too, have bow fished for many years, making all of my own equipment...mostly primitive or traditional bows, arrows.

Great looking homemade harpoon points/heads fellas! Yep, those will work just dandy.

Small harpoon points are greatly underestimated in a survival situation where one is around ponds, lakes, rivers, etc. I have taken everything from frogs, a few small fur bearers, and a variety of big and small fish with harpoon points. The traditional trident points are a little large for a small kit but they are effective and reasonably easy to make.
