Trying to put together a mini kit that can fit easily into a cargo pocket
wanted to hear about or see pics of your guys small easily carried psk's..

I got most of my stuff together, but now have to down size.. My space blanket and paracord make it too bulky everything else can easily fit into an altoids tin..I feel confident in my natural shelter making abilities, but I figure if I get caught by bad weather by surprise it might be handt to have something to crawl under..

again this is a pocket kit it is not meant to be a substitute for other gear when enjoying the bush..just as a last ditch emergency supplement.

I to this day have never seen a mini kit as well though out as K. Estela's

That thing has everything you could ever need in it.

When hunting or outdoors, I carry the following in my cargo pocket:

*[SURVIVAL KIT IN ALOKSAK (food/water)]:
-water purification tablets (food/water)
-AMK personal first aid kit (PFK)
-maxipad for blood compress (PFK)
-immodium (PFK)
-1 pair latex gloves (PFK)
-Epi Pen (PFK)
-4 MS Contin, i.e., morphine (PFK)
-5 alcohol wipes (PFK, fire)
-magnesium fire starter (fire)
-bic lighter (fire)
-Busse Skeleton Key fixed blade and sheath (survival)
-2 small glow sticks (survival)
-disposable survival blanket with survival instructions (survival)

In addition, I always have on my person an SAK, another fixed blade, another lighter, a flashlight, and a key chain with a cheapo compass and whistle on it.

that's a pretty good list.. In my bag I carry a pretty comprehensive FAK
for my ps this is what I have
Space blanket xxxxx
15 feet of paracord
water purification tablets
a 1gallon ziplock bag
an heavy foil mini loaf tin (folded) xxxxxx
an led
a whistle
a bsa hotspark
a bic mini lighter
10 waterproof matched w/striker xxxxxx
2 trick b-day candles
1 matchcase full of pbj cotton
4 fish hooks xxxxxx
4 splitshots xxxxxx
20 ft of fishin string xxxxxx
4 strips of ducttape
4 safety pin
needle and thread
razor blade
4 large badaids
4 butterfly bandaids
tweezers
iodine wipes
Motrin (I get bad migraines)

The items wit the x's are what I'm considering dumping

No mini-kit is complete without a Fenix E01 -> over 10 hours of undimming light (~5lumens is more than the mag solitaire does on a fresh battery, before dimming to 50% within 5 minutes, and going out in under an hour) on a single AAA battery... or 15+ hours using a lithium AAA battery.

All for $20 or so...

... My space blanket and paracord make it too bulky everything else can easily fit into an Altoids tin.

Not sure if this helps but I duct tape my kit closed for waterproofing and tape storage then wrap about 10 or so feet of paracord around the tin in a single layer and pull the ends under(like wrapping a hiking stick/knife).

your very much welcome... Estela built a great kit !
only thing I would change is not to add the folder,BRK&T (PSK/Mikro C.)make small FB, I would rather go with that than a folder.

This is as small as I am willing to go. It really isn't bad to carry at all.

Could I ditch some stuff to make it smaller? Yup...but I'd hate to need something I left behind.

(not pictured is a whistle and anti-biotic cream)

I usually layer kits...
I multi day pack has all the things in it I need to live very comfortably for at least a week
My shoulder bad can do the same for 2-3 days an is what I bring when day hiking or leaving camp

My psk should be to get me through a night or 2 till I can get out or get rescued. It's in my pants pocket for those.."I'm just gonna walk down to the lake, I don't need my gear" moments

Riley,

I have started to migrate toward a "PSK" that I wear rather than carry. Like you said, this isn't all the gear I carry when out and about, but final layer that I'll still have with me if I get seperated from my gear. (Unless I get seperated from my pants! )

To that end, My right cargo pocket is dedicated to my Sil-Poncho and map and the left is for typical PSK items, similar to those Kevin has in his Pellican case kits. (Signal mirror, purification tabs, tinder, water bag, cordage, ferro rod, etc.)

In my front left pocket, I clip my EDC flashlight (Nitcore Defender Extreme) and I carry my EDC folder (Kershaw Blackout) and a Bic in my right front pocket.

I also carry a tiny ferro rod/mag bar, Photon LED and REI whistle on a necklace. I usually hate anything around my neck, and cannot stand anything as heavy as a knife, but I've worn this quite a bit and found it tolerable. Add to that a compass on my watchband, and tinder paper and a mini ferro rod in my wallet. If I have my keys with me (I usually don't when I'm in the wooes), That adds a SAK Classic, a BSA Hot Spark, another Photon LED, and a Peanut Lighter.

I'm planning on purchasing an ultralight bivy bag similar to the one High Desert Walker uses. Hopefully, I'll be able to fold it flat to fit in my left back pocket.

As far as the magnesium bars .... are they really even worth the space they take up in the kit ? I've never used one but have read on some threads that they are a waste.

For my taste, a mini kit is a last resort backup. I used to carry one as EDC, but decided to go with one of Doug Ritter designed, Adventure Medical Pocket Survival Paks, which I enhanced a bit and then I saw the AM Pocket Medic, which I enhanced a bit as well. Both kits fit into a cargo pocket and I added one of the AM Heatsheets for shelter use. I picked the heatsheet because of a review on another site, where the author had erected a lean 2 type of shade with a heatsheet and left if up for over 30 days through wind, rain and the laws of gravity. He even cut the edge and in all of that time, it never got any worse. One tough piece of temporary kit, that's for sure.

I like mine. If I'm having trouble getting natural tinder to light I will use a gauze pad from my kit.

Fluff it up a bit, some magnesium powder, and almost instant flame.
