Mini-Mag 2AA LED upgrades

What would you guys recommend for a 4-D cell Maglite?

It seems like the Nite Ize ($10 on their website) is better than the Maglite version ($16-18), but from the reading I've done both of those still lose initial brightness quickly as they heat up since they don't heat sink very well.

Any other recommendations, or should I just go for the Nite Ize? I can't find an MJ LED kit (or a Super MJ), and though I'm decent at DIY projects and with a soldering iron, I don't really want to dish out the cash or heavily modify my Maglite as I'd like to be able to swap back from LED to incandescent...

The 3w LED from Maglite is much brighter even after it heats up and loses some efficiency.

I have no personal experience with the above. But the TLE5 MiniStar 2 from same Terra Lux company is many times brighter and runs much longer than the stock AA mag incandescent. And surerly much better than any of the Nite Ize options. If you want the option to go back and forth with your orginal incan bulb, which I cannot see why for a flashlight this size, this may be a cost effective unit. The Mini Star 5 as quoted above may be a good or even a better ticket. But it cost much more. So it depends which falls into your particular requirements. The SMJ LEDs can be had at the same website at www.lighthound.com

I would not recommend any nite-ize led's for anything but close-up work based on my experience with their 2AA LED upgrades. Almost no beam just a wide, flat, even flood. No projection.

I am personally planning on picking up a 3D LED mag to replace my lost one in the future. Hoping the MJ or SMJ (I am unsure now which I have, I suspect SMJ) LED will fill the void until I have the spare moneys for the 3D.
