Having never really attempted a review, this is a bit of a first. It may seem a bit odd to review a knife that has ceased production, just thought it would be fun to share some thoughts on a recent acquisition. Like many of you, I try to keep myself on a knife budget- very hard to do when there are so many nice blades out there. Had been looking at several, narrowed the list to a few, then a nice user Mini Manix shows up on the boards. They seem to have quite a following; It was not one of the knives I was considering but have seen how fast they get snapped up so I pulled the trigger on it: Thanks Dale. Got it last Friday, and all I can say is this thing is a beast! After handling and using it a couple of days here are my likes:
Fit/Finish- For a production knife very good, absolutely no complaints
Solid- This thing feels more like a fixed blade when open than a folder. Lock-up is super, zero blade play, when this thing locks up it inspires confidence.
Ergos- Whether gripped on the scales or choking up on the choil it fits the hand real nice, seems very similar in hand to the Native. G-10 has a real nice, textured feel to it. Jimping is well placed, has thumb seems to gravitate to it naturally. Versatile tip up/down, left/right hand clip placement a plus.
Blade- I like wide, flat ground blades. It is a bit thick, but has the blade width to retain very good/excellent slicing capability. S30V is a personal (and proven) favorite, though I can't help but wonder what an S90V or CPM-3V version of this knife would be like. I have experienced some minor chipping issues with this steel, but it seemed to be a non-issue after a couple of sharpenings.
Dislikes: Have yet to find one.
About the only thing that comes close is overall folded width and weight, Definitely the widest folder I own. It almost seems a tad overbuilt, but not to the point of extreme. Not everyone would like a knife of this size- I do.
Overall I am very pleased, and am definitely glad to be a member of the Manix club. Have always liked my Native, and this knife hits me as being a Native on serious steroids:thumbup:
