mini metal lathe?

Does anyone have a link to a good tutorial on learning the metal lathe? I bet beads would be a good starter project.

Daniel- a great place to start is by looking up: mrpete222 on youtube. He's a retired metal shop teacher, has a radio announcer voice, and a great teaching/sharing ability. I honestly think I've learned more from his videos than I did getting a machining certificate at the college.

IMHO, beads are a ways past being a beginner project. The way I have done them, was with a specialized radius turning tool. I suppose you could make them with a corner rounding endmill and some jerry-rigged engineering. :D

Most "Turning 101" type classes will start with learning how to fixture your work (3 and 6 jaw chucks are as simple as a drill press chuck, but a 4 jaw is a bit trickier, faceplate, lathe dogs, etc.), facing, turning to a specific diameter, cutting to a shoulder, drilling/reaming/boring, parting, cutting threads, etc.... all before beads.

Daniel, you're such a frick'n dynamo, I hope you do get a lathe because I'd love to see what wild, crazy, and awesome stuff you would come up with!

Daniel-

Here's just one of the videos from mrpete222. It's part 1 of 3 showing how to make a V-groove pulley on the lathe. Great example of his wonderful teaching skills, IMHO. :)

"Of course you could go down to the hardware store and ask the lady with the mustache for one..." that's sig line quality material right there!!! ;) :D

I have three metal lathes and a tabletop milling machine, I use my toy lathes (9 inch South Bends) for small parts with a lot of finicky detail, and for drilling handle blocks for swords (I have one set up primarily for through drilling handles) and my Leblond Regal 15C5 for serious production work making pommels and other round parts

any chance to get a working lathe for a good price should be jumped on

I just got up and running my 1880s pedal powered metal lathe, with screw cutting and wood turning attachments etc... (photo is prior to my putting the new belt on it) so i'm going to try to 'hand turn' some radiuses and the like on this and see how it goes. Need very sharp tools to cut by foot power!
