Anyone have one of these???adequate woodsknife??I heard brkt can make the 12c27 perform similarly to a2...

I don't have hands on experience with one but I think they would be a great knife especially when complimented with a larger tool such as axe, saw or chopper. I think mini- would work well as a neck knife as well. It certainly has the right profie for a bushcraft blade.

i have mini-northhstar in BCM... it's a great knife.... wicked sharp and perfect for roaming the woods...

i think you need one riley...:D

the 12c27 is superb steel... so far i haven't had much problems with it, it does seem very similar to a2....

I have one, two actaully - since I won one and gave it to my wife. The MNS (Mini NorthStar) was designed an implemented as an every day carry knife, as opposed to a Bushcraft knife.

With that caveat, it performs well for light woodcraft work and kitchen duties. Batoning small pieces of wood is fine. Feathering is fine. kgd makes a good point about pairing one up with a chopper and with thin scales (Bark River calls it a Nano MiniNortStar), it can make a neat little necker. If you're on a short hike/day hike, this knife is a solid performer and a good companion to have with you. Its' size, lines, and leather sheath make for a nice, classy package. I agree that BRKT has a very good heat treat formula for 12C27. I've since swapped using the MNS for one of there Kepharts, also in 12C27. This MNS may go back for pink scales, for my daughter when she is ready for it (she's 5 yo).

I don;t have the mini, but I have a Northstar, and I can say a mini-Northstar will be my next Bark River purchase!

I have two mini-SKinners in 12C27. I have NO complaints about that steel. Very tough and easy to sharpen.

Just got my Mini North Star in yesterday. I can't leave it alone! Alot of knife for it's size. I was looking for an EDC knife for while I'm off work, wanted something with 3" to 3.5" blade. The Mini is exactly what "I" was looking for. My next BRK&T will be a Bravo 1. I would use the Bravo for work & camping. Mini is a "great", "little" knife! Sheeple friendly too, Jeans, tee-shirt, don't even see it. Good luck, M

I got a mini North Star recently. Didn't take the wife long to comandeer it. She has been using it to clean deer with. She likes it so much I doubt I will get it back. Takes a really great edge and she says the edge retention is "wonderful."

Got ours from Wilderness Tools: http://www.wildernesstools.com/
Nice guy, good price.

Hi Riley. I bought a Mini Northstar this summer and find it a great little knife. The handles are green micarta, although that is hard to tell from the pictures. My one complaint so far is that the micarta handles are very slick, unlike the micarta handles on my Rat-7. Here are some pics:

Here it is with the stock leather sheath that it comes with and the custom firesteel I bought with it. Ruler for size reference.

Here is the custom Kydex sheath I had forum member jll466 make for me. I was going to have Normark make me one, but I couldn't bear to part with the knife to send it to Canada.

Here it is with a "mini-mini-kit" attached with a ranger band cut from a bicycle inner tube.

Here are the contents of the mini-mini-kit: Micro multi-tool, REI whistle, small plastic case with PCBs. I also had a Photon Micro Lite but I scavenged it for another kit.

I brought this with me last weekend with every intention of doing a photo essay of using it to take apart a Mule Deer. Unfortunately, the deer did not cooperate. What's worse, I took a spill and messed up my shoulder! :(

great looking stuff flix....

i wouldn't mind having a kydex sheath for my mini n.s.... mine has the old style sheath...:o

Those are some really nice pictures Flix - thanks for sharing them. I also like that you added the ruler shot in for reference. That is particularly helpful. Sorry to hear about your hunting and shoulder/bender.

GW, my wife and niece saw me using the Mini-Northstar over Labor Day weekend at the cabin and I almost lost it!

Mike, Check out this link for info about the sheath. (I'll also post the pix there.)

nice flix, Thanks, for the pics...how's the shoulder??

Riley & Chrisaloia, I'm really bummed about the shoulder! I cannot even hold my bow out at arm's length without screaming like a little girl. THe mule deer rut is in full swing, there is fresh snow on the ground, and I had staff set to cover for me this weekend! I've got to get to a doc early next week because I've been invited to hunt with one of the video production companies I work with. Maybe a cortizone shot will get me up & running.

Hope you heal fast. Remember, long term proper healing is better than getting to hunt in the short term but screwing your shoulder for a long time.

Good luck

Chris

thanks for the link flix....

i would love to get one of those sheaths..... i like having the option of 2 different sheaths....:D

Flix, I busted up my shoulder pretty good a few weeks back...i was resistant on going to the docbecause I thougth he would tellme I had a rotator cuff taear and I wouldn't be able to shoot my bow...I since healed (so I guess it wsn't) but it took over 2 months...proably woulve been quicker if I went to the doc. good luck bro, hope it works out

Mini Northstar is an excellent all-round knife for light duties, food prep and general hiking.

Its slimness makes it an ideal carry knife and above all, it is well-finished,ergonomic and attractive. Mine is in Antique Ivory, a scale material I particularly like BUT I have noticed quite a lot of variation in the colouring from knife to knife. The Nebula I own is in a much less appealing and convincing Antique Ivory than my other Barkies.

The sharpshooter sheath is slim too and very easy to carry.Myself, I'm no fan of kydex (it is safe&sturdy granted) but I find it scratches up knives too much. The Sandvik stainless BRKT use is top notch stuff, just wish they made the full size Nothstar in it as I find carbon&A2 too time consuming with maintenance etc.
