Hello,
I was thinking of adding a small piece of fine grit sandpaper or a cut piece of emery board in my altoids survival kit. This piece of kit would be to sharpen my knife blade in the case that i didn't have a steel, ceramic rod, or stone. Does anyone know if using sandpaper or an emery board will work to sharpen a knife?

Thanks in advance.

Sandpaper - yes. Emory board - in a pinch, yes. TheEmory board isn't going to last long and if it gets wet, it'll pretty much come apart.

I'd suggest a piece of 500 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper. A little coarse for some but we're talking about last option and you don't want to be there all day.

My dad has gotten by just fine for the last 78 years using nothing but sandpaper to sharpen his slipjoint.

I can sharpen a knife using wet/dry sandpaper 3 times as sharp than I can with a stone. Not knocking stones mind you just easier for me.

Even with the scandis I like to lay the sandpaper on a strop on the leather so the oily leather kind of holds it in place and use it.

I usually carry a small 3 sided strop with me. Smooth leather on one side, Rough on the other and a 1/2" strip of mouse pad on the other. Then I have a film canister with strips of 600 and 1500 and a little bit of steel wool.
