FWIW, I've tested replacement nalgene caps on the wide mouth kleen kanteens and they didn't fit. I usually carry a kanteen but have considered switching to a guyot, specifically for the compatibility with nalgene adapters. Honestly, I usually have at least two water bottles in my pack, so one is steel and the other plastic. Helps keep all my bases covered.

MM, thanks for the feedback regarding using Nalgene accessories with the widemouth KKs. I went out and bought another Guyot Standard which is awaiting its pimping. 
MTWarden, yes, both bails are removable. On the steel leader bail, the end loop simply is lifted off of the crimp I'm using as a stop. After the leader goes through the end loop, forming the loop that goes around the neck of the bottle, it goes up and over, creating the bail. the other end has a swivel and a split ring that reattaches to the neck loop. I have used two additional stops to keep it on the other side of the bottle to keep everything balanced.
Maybe this will make that a little clearer.
The metal "boiling lid" just sits on top to keep the heat in and junk out.
If I put a snap clip on the leash to this lid I could use it with the new rigid "bucket bail."
To give credit where due, Joezilla made a similar rigid bail for his Guyot before I first tried my hand at such pimping.

I've wondered how well those cheap SS bottles will hold up. Some of them look like a direct knock off of the kleen kanteen, right down to the threads and caps - you have to wonder if they are made in the same factory, if the seals are as good, if they are more likely to leak, made from thinner or lower grade steel, etc...
I've always shelled out the extra cash for KK, but I wonder if I've wasted my money.
