Minimalist SAKs

Looks like you guys are right on. This looks like the 84m golfer. Old combo tool, fluted corkscrew, toothpick and tweezers, no lanyard/keyring. I didn't realize they came in 84mm. It's a nice minimal tool if scissors are important to you.

there should be a site that has every SAK ever produced and all the commenoratives/special issues with dates of production.

It should be searchable by tools (like the Swiss Army Brands old find/design a knife feature on their web site - sadly no longer available),
and by name, model #, and/or year of production.

I often wanted to do a tool by tool compilation - something like I did in My EDC Story - Victorinox Combo Tool Story

But I know the task is mammoth and I'd probably wouldn't be interested in all the tools to want to do all................

However we have quite a few SAK Knuts here who are very knowledgable that we might be able to pool our resource to make a start?
and Victorinox and Wenger themselves may well have records/resources to help?

I’m a little surprised that there is not some kick ass sites devoted to collecting SAK, since there are so many people around the world who collect them. I don’t collect them (although I do accumulate them!) , but when I come across one like the “lumberjack” or the other one that I posted about that was discontinued or not normally sold in the USA and it would be nice to know what it was called at least.

I suppose that such a site would be a major effort with so many models and variations over the years. I haven’t counted ‘em, but Victorinox claims that they make 100 different officer’s knives and 300 different “other pocket and professional knives” (plus another 400 different types of kitchen and butcher’s knives).

I have a SwissChamp XL and it has the elcetricians blade too. I believe that the SwissChamp XXL also has the electricians blade. I wish that this blade was available on a tinker...

Thanks Frank for showing us that,
and confirming the Model # 5036 is for the 84mm Golfer.

However did you guys notice the slight discreprency in the photo?

The actual knife has the older combo tool -
whereas the instruction sheet shows the later version.......

The SAK book has a lot of interesting info in it. It's well worth picking up.

I could not find any reference to the "plumber" -
but found that model #2.2313 was called the Lumberjack in places like UK and CZ -
when I asked about it on the other forum - numberthree said it's called the Plumber in Canada -
not only that, he very kindly send me a "Plumber" #2.2313 -
pictured here (the box at the other end flap is written "Plumber" -

It's an 84mm Economy model with the textured nylon scales and pressed in silver printed scalloped shield logo.
Has toothpick and tweezers in the handles - and only 2 backsprings/layers wide - so it is very slim for a SAK with a woodsaw
(due to the use of the Combo tool)

Looks and feels like a very useful model that would slip easily into the pocket, a good outdoors minimalist SAK.

Many thanks numberthree - this was very kind of you.

FYI: there's one for sale on ebay just like this, only it has a rounded blade.

That's one of the new for 2003 models - My 1st Victorinox Plus US Model # 53565.

My 1st Victorinox, US Model #53555 is the Bantam with rounded tip blade.

I often borrow the tweezers and toothpick from my wife's Classic.
I wish that there was a Victorinox that had a blade, toothpick and tweezers - nothing else.
The nail file and scissors put me off the Classic.

I like that - less is more......

Almost there - the Bantam is a pretty nice model:

bantam
size:84 mm | 3 1/4 inch
Large Blade
Combo Tool - Cap Lifter with Can Opener, Screwdriver, Wire Stripper
Key Ring
Toothpick
Tweezers

Pocket sized at 84mm (3 1/4") closed, the additional "Combo" tool doesn't add thickness, since it shares the same backspring as the main blade.

The Combo tool is my favorite Vic tool since it manages to combine so many functions into a single blade tool -
a screwdriver is such a useful item, and the bottle cap-lifter.....

Personally for me, I prefer the Waiter:

It's the Bantam with a corkscrew (makes one very popular at parties and picnics) again not much additional thickness since the corkscrew is on the back of the knife - and it will accept the mini jeweller's screwdriver stored in the corkscrew.

Well all this talk of minimalist SAKs pushed me over the edge. So I just bought a V'nox silver Alox Bantam on eBay. I had one of the less expensive Bantams and really liked it as a secondary EDC but I gave it to a kid at church. I think I'll like this version even better. BTW, Vincent you need to quit putting so much peer pressure on me. I've bought a Tinker and now this Bantam since you started all of these SAK threads :D ;).

"peer"?
- isn't that a guy that's relieving himself?

Think of the joy you gained for not that much money -
SAKs are some of the best value for money and useful knives out there - made to be carried and used.....
(of course I'm not biassed... that's just the way I walk.... ;) )

and remember talking minimalism has steered you away from the bigger -more expensive models -
to the smaller/thinner and less costly models .....
see, less is more
(models to buy :D :D ;) )

trane fan,
Enjoy that Bantam. It's so thin and light you might forget you have it. It works very well in a wallet too.

Thanks. I've had a Pocket Pal for a few years and really like it's light weight. The Bantam isn't really any bigger from what I understand and I really like the versatility offered by the bottle opener/screw driver, etc... .

trane fan,

This came up earlier in this thread (page 2) - just for clarity -
the "Pocket Pal" is the cellidor (plastic) handled version.

whereas the knife you have is the ribbed red Alox handled version - which is called the "Popular" (Swiss/international #0.6901.20) -
the smooth silver Alox handled Secretary is similar.

Actually the knife to which I referred has smooth red metallic scales. It is a V'nox that I got approximately five years ago at Mast General Store in Boone, NC.

My apologies for jumping to (wrong) conclusions.

That sounds very interesting.
Does it have a keyring?
Is it the 84mm length?
or by any chance 75mm closed?

Do you have a model # for it, please?
Can you please post a pic?

Thanks
