Minimalist SAKs

has anyone actually figured out the Victorinox model numbering system?

Not the US model #s which are different from anywhere else in the world -
but the original Victorinox Swiss/international model #s
that everyone else in the world uses?

Look at the my Alox Bantams -
without keyring - # 0.23 00.26
with keyring - # 0.23 01.26

Now look at the
Popular - # 0.69 01.20
Excelsior - # 0.69 00.27

I think/guss is that (from the bold numbers above) -
00 = NO keyring
01 = keyring.

So a Popular with the checked ribbing in red Alox withOUT keyring -
IF it exists - would have a model # 0.69 00.20

Some more thoughts on the
Victorinox model numbering System

Victorinox (Swiss/international) model numbers are in the format:

a.bb cc.xx

where xx seems optional

a. appears to be only 0 or 1
where 1. = 91mm models
0. apears to be for any other size.....
eg: the US (91mm) Tinker and the 84mm Tinker:
fbb7db49.jpg

and 0. = any other size:
fbb7c7ea.jpg
fbc9aa65.jpg
fbc538df.jpg

I think I've figured out more - but it may not be that consistent - I'll post more later, or perhaps start a new thread on the Victorinox numbering system.

Any input from any other SAKnuts out there?

If you have access to the SOSAK over at KnifeForums.com - someone with the moniker of icetiger has posted some pretty comprehensive explanation of the Victorinox model numbering system -
here's a link to the thread -

Victorinox model numbering system?

You can still get the Cybertool 34 at Graveyard Mall for $34.99. That's the best price I've seen it for. It's a little too big for pocket carry, but it makes a great belt tool.

I have no problem carrying the 34 in my front jeans pockets. If I'm wearing khakis, it takes a bit of getting used to. The CyberTool 41 rides with me to work as a computer programmer either in my nylon briefcase or on my belt. The 41 is definitely too bulky for carrying in pants pockets.

and it could replace the two separate can-opener and cap-lifter tools on the Spartan model"
Does the combo screwdriver work on phillips screws?
justin

I recently used the tip of the combo tool to remove two phillips screws from my A/C unit to replace the filter. It was the one on the Bantam.

That "Minimal" designation covers a lot of turf - I have a collection of BSA Victorinox as well as a few from the past - I always seem to have a Classic around - but a couple weeks ago the local "TARGET" stores were clearanceing our some stuff - Leatherman Micra at 9.50 and finally the PST at 8.75 was a good deal - they also had both the Soldier SAK and the 91mm Tinker (with pouch) for 9.50 - I grabbed one of each - I think that was probably the best deal of the batch and now I'll retire my 84mm tinker with no lanyard ring.. I still think the SAKs are the best bang for the buck around and a clearance like Target's sure makes it even better!

Yes, the tip of the combo tool works on phillips.

Hey! I DIDN'T know that -
but then I've EDC my Scientist for over 16 years - and it has a great in-body Phillips screwdriver - so I really haven't had the occassion to try the combo tool as a Phillips driver. Also I don't think the combo tool was specifically designed to fit Phillips screws - unlike the standard can-opener's small screwdriver tip which is documented to fit #1 and #2 Phillips

Do you guys use the combo tool straight-on, or at an angle to fit the corner in to the Phillips slot? Do you by any chance know the Phillips sizes the combo tool will fit?

My EDC for over 6 years before the Scientist was the Economy line Waiter - from Jan/1982 - but it had the older style combo tool - I never tried it on a Phillips though.

If as you guys say the combo tool fits Phillips then that makes the Bantam Alox and Waiter models even more functional as Minimalist SAKs.....

Thanks,

Time to upgrade! US Minimalist Version 2.0
Nice.......
But can anyone seriously consider any of those multiTools an actual knife?
Pliers - yes, scissors - yes, but a knife?

Pictures visible in posts is done by "hotlinking" -

First, get the picture onto a web page (or any existing web posted picture) where it's visible without special permissions, and check the pic (right-click) Properties that the url/address ends in the usual .jpg, .gif etc.

Then simply when composing your post click on the picture icon (which I think you did) and
and the picture will appear in your post (use the preview post option to confirm this)

Please be considerate and size the picture to something like 480x360 pixels, and use JPG compression to something like 70% - to get the file down to about 20-30Kb.

As for posting it to hell - I wouldn't know how, since I haven't been there.... :D

Buy one and find out ... the blade on a Juice is way sharper & more useful than a swiss.

The micra blade again beats out a mini swiss blade. :)

Opinions abound......

Sorry but mine is not that favorable - on most multitools (and that includes the ones posted above) have very poor excuses for knife blades, and yes, I've used them - they are not comfortable to use and although they can be made to be "sharp" they do not function well as knives.

Most people on this forum are really well informed about knives -
so I'm just a bit surprised that multitools (with very few exceptions) can even be considered as "good knives".

sorry...........

Would you use a Swiss as your primary knife?

That's why I carry a CF serrated delica.

The WAVE blades are not too bad to be used as a primary.

Absolutely -

It is well posted (adnauseam in fact :D ) that I've EDC a SAK for over 22 years - that's every single day for 22 years -
16 years for the Scientist model and even had my current one customized and EDC for over 11 years -
Scientist2.jpg

So yes, it has been my PRIMARY and only EDC knife.

Please check the biggest, longest and most viewed thread on BladeForums -

EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)??

to see just how many BladeForum members actually EDC a SAK......

hung by your own words -
even you don't consider a multitool a real knife.... 'nuff said, thank you.

So are you "trolling" ?

Leathermans blades beating SAKs? Not in my experience.
Maybe the newer 154CM blades....maybe....the jury is still out.

Thanks Paul -

You're right I just tried it with my EDC combo tool - using the corner it seems to fit a range of Phillips screws - including ones that hold my stairs handrail and I could easily open computer case.......(now where does this board go ? :) ) that's pretty versatile - and I never even tried that - that really makes something like the Bantam Alox or the Waiter (both with combo tools) really functional as minimalist SAKs -

I actually think the Bantam Alox is a great knife if they would bring back the keychain loop ... they were selling them for $10 on sale at target a month ago.

I have two of these that I carry from time to time:

For $8 you can't beat this Vic Twine Knife!
