Minimum blade length to baton properly?

I think 99.9999% of all damage done to knives whilst batoning is due to improper technique. Don't place any stress on the handle, and you'll be fine.

Hit the nail on the head right there. ;)

The size of the wood just has to be adjusted to suit the knife

I have batoned with this one which has a 2.5 inch blade...

"Ray Mears / Splitting Wood with a Saw"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcRYSFqjLgY

Haha,;)

I have tried that and it doesnt work unless the wood is perfectly dry, the right type of wood, with few knots and its a apart of Ray Mears show. Even he wasnt sure it would work go back and listen.

Seriously even if you were "lucky" enough to get it to work, it only works in half so a better tool than a saw is needed to make kindling. A knife or hatchet/axe. I carry a saw but its not for splitting.

So you are leaving KY? At least we can carry anything we dang well please. :)

supernoodle, had I known you were in KY we would've hung out long ago...now you tell me when I have a week of hell to get through (divorce, moving to Dallas).

Some pal you are! :D

I need to baton some stuff with my Gunny and see how well it works...i guess i wouldnt be splitting much more than 3in logs anyway.

Use the saw to cut a kerf (slot) in the end of the log, then drive in a wooden wedge. You can split a log of almost any size using that technique. Or use a knife like a BK-2 (5 1/4 inches). It's thick and batons really well.

What Skammer said. I read this post earlyer today and saw that video and went down into the timber and tried that. I was using Bone dry Ash. It did not work at all for me. I split more wood today with my MEGA 1-0 and than I did with that saw type technique.
MEGA 1-0 1
Saw 0
Any one else go out and try that saw thinkgy?

Attention Blade Forum critters.
There is a brand new invention I just discovered !!!;)

It goes by the name " hatchet"

Blade length only determines the diameter of the wood you're splitting. If it makes you feel any better, 5.5 inches is 1.5 inches longer than the knife I use to baton.:D

I guess Ive just been spoiled with 7-10in blades being my baton knives of choice...gotta test out the little guys!
