I went for a short hike today and inspired by some recent threads decided to ditch my usual full PSK and just take a minimal amount of gear !

This was where I walked...

This was the contents of my pockets emptied out, the blue container is my fire starting kit....

The tree's were decked out for christmas....

My dog remained on BigFoot watch.....

I didn't find any BigFoot tracks but I did come across some Racoon tracks.....

I had hoped to find more tracks but my favourite spots were covered over in Cedar leaves making track spotting real tough, I think even Tom Brown Jr would have had a hard time !!!!!:D

Pitdog,

Your pictures are always great, and an inspiration for anyone who loves being outdoors!

I like the minimal approach, too.
My thought still goes to something I read a long time ago: If your PSK is too big and bulky, it ends up being left in the car. Find a size that is so easy to have with you, yet, has the essentials, to ensure you take it with you.

Again, thanks for the pics. good stuff.

Love the pics. I've got Temperance ,but since I can't replace it,I don't use it much. Just finished putting together an F1 though :):)
Keep posting pics of your hikes,it gives the rest of us a place we wish we could be.

Hey pitdog,

Great pictures as always, evidenced by the fact that you even pulled SkunkWerX out of the woodwork.

I'm all in favour of minimal gear, but I think given where you live I'd include some kind of tarp/large poncho/tube tent. Waterproof shelters can be improvised, but generally take a hell of a long time, whereas a tarp/large poncho/tube tent is instant 'waterproof'.

Beautiful photos as always and I agree with DOC-CANADA about having some sort of shelter capabilities on you.

I do kinda agree with you Doc but if I did that I'd think maybe I should also include some cordage and maybe a....
and before I knew it I might as well have carried my full PSK ( which is what I usually do anyway !)

Also the temperature here, rarely falls below zero unlike the weather you get where you are !;)

it's amazing how collective unconcious works....I striiped down my psk completely last week and even stopped carrying a back pack for day hikes in lieu of a small belt pouch on some baraided paracord...awesome pics as always....

If you are out in the green stuff you basically need:
Something to cut with.
Something to start a fire with.
Something to make noice with.
Number one is the whistle then the fire thinghy then the knife then the compass and after that comes all the fancy stuff.
If I should be very survivalnutty I should carry a small but really good neck knife (WM1 or even U2), a whistle and a firesteel and a compass around my neck. This I will not use normally. I would use the same things but those carried in my pack. That way my survival stuff will not be used up.
One thing though about the firesteel. It is actually best when you have used it for a while, then the scraping surface is bigger.
I have a Fallkniven U2 with a whistle attached and a small firesteel with a spycapsule on it in my pocket. In theory that would be enough.

Beautiful pics as always pitdog
I know what you are talking about when you want to size down your kit. But I will always go with what I'm comfortable with. If you end up breaking a leg or spraining an ankle you can't go and build a shelter to stay warm. Well not easily anyway. At a minimum I carry at least a poncho or heatsheet bivybag just in case I need a shelter in a pinch.

Great shots again bro!
I was riding with some buddies in the Mt. Work area today, and it's amazing how pristine a lot of the land around here still is.
The only thing I'd add to your kit, if you don't mind my suggesting, is a space blanket and a whistle. I have space blankets stashed in every gear carrier I own. If there's an injury of any magnitude, shock is going to be a real concern, and the space blanket can definitely help keep the heat in when your body shuts down. We lost a couple guys today, and if it weren't for the whistle, we may not have hooked back up.

I hate you picture taking walking woods types. Here I am sitting at home and you think it is OK to go out and brag about how pretty it is when you go out for a walk:grumpy::mad::D;)

Why as soon as I can walk I'm gonna have to go there and track you down.... or just go out and track something else- I get distracted pretty easy.
Good looking walks you have though.

Hey Kris how did you break both legs again? not to hijack this thread or anything but I remember it happend a while back ????

Skydiving- and yesterday was the first day I got up on my feet (with much support). Can't wait to get into the woods like Pitdog does- hmmmmm.... Does he ever actually leave- I think he is trying to trick us into thinking he leaves on occasion!
