Mirror Finished Blades

I hate it as well. I like a satin finish on my knives. No coatings, or bead blasted finish, just satin.

I think a lot of people feel they look cheap (me included) as many cheap garbage knives had them. They cost more and are less functional. No real point on user knives which most production knives are

Yup, a lot of the time, I automatically think of cheap, no name, stainless flea market knives... Probably because as a kid I had quite a collection of those :P When I started getting into knives that could actually serve a purpose, they didn't have mirror polished blades... So, my perception automatically thinks cheapo, unless it's a very well done blade, like the Randall pictured in this thread. Which is a beauty by the way.

I don't mind a mirror finish on a collectible but would not have it on an every day use blade. I dislike coated blades. Scratches on them can't be polished out. My preference is satin finished blades.

How do you do a mirror polish on a blade?

From factory grind to mirror polish, patience, graduating grades of abrasives and a case of cold beer.

Orange peel is what it sounds like, imagine an orange covered by chrome paint, also known as doing it wrong... unless you want the orange peel look.

At 0.5 micron, water will perfectly bead on steel and run off leaving very small droplets, makes it very easy to clean off, great for kitchen use, immediately rinse and dry.

My user is a user, exactly that. I put an orange peel finish, quick and easy and improves corrosion resistance. The scratches don't bother me a bit. It's my user so scratches are badges of well served use for me.
YMMV

What I like about a mirror finish is the ability to get someone's attention if the lighting is right and communicate via Morse code (without flushing game, for one example). Also a great survival tool in some circumstances.

I wish I had gotten some of those Buck S30 mirror finish blades when they were out.

It's also a great gift for the ladies.

I, too, prefer mirror finishes. I have polished some blades with a Dremel, but the end result was only so-so. However, it did improve the Benchmades...:D

rockstead knives have a mirror finish, and somehow it seems to hold up well under hard use. i have no idea how though
