Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the greatest sharpener of them all.

Don't care if you are in an igloo, you can't be harder to find than me anyway. Fedex can't even track me down.

Okay, I sent mine in, in case there are any spots left. I've always been very self-impressed with my sharpening abilities, so maybe it's time to find out how good I am compared to other knife knuts. :D

This is an open ended "contest", I use the term loosely. There is also no restriction on how many times you can enter. I would also like to see it used to compare systems, so if you see a gadget or set of stones not represented then try to fill that hole.

I finished the tests on Dale's blades, to no real surprise they are extremely sharp. His numbers were very low and the only thing they could not do is push cut toilet paper and I am not sure that is even possible, by all means someone prove me wrong :

Good luck knocking him off the number one spot. I will be adding some edge retention work on 3/8" hemp when I get a few more rolls.

Great idea. As an Edge Pro user , I will let Ben be my 'champion'.
But it will be very interesting to see how all the guys with the super expensive 'water stones' do.
My money is on Ben.

You win the awesome price of being inducted into the "Captains of Cut" and will be forever immortalized on the internet in the hall of champions - until someone knocks you off anyway.

-Cliff

Is this open to people ANYWHERE in the world? I'd quite fancy joining in for pure novelty value, just to see where I come :D

Yes, assuming you have an address that Canada post will deliver to, if you live in "Parts Unknown" I'll have to track down Bobby Henam.

-Cliff

It's a real bummer that Dale went first. If I had been first, I might have my name as the reigning champion.... At least untill the next blade was tested.

That was kind of funny, it gets worse though I also sent blades out to J.J. of Razor's edge and Catra, getting your name up in the ranking is going to get real difficult real fast. Of course being able to say "I can get blades 90% as sharp as Ben Dale." isn't too shabby though, and who knows, maybe you are a lot better than you think.

-Cliff

Cliff,
Sent you an email, I may as well put in my best effort. It will probably be different than sharpening a 10" blade. :) I think I may need a variety of sharpening experiences. Thanks for doing the cutting again.

I'll send you a pack Ray and you can forge them into a bowie and sharpen that up no problem.

Yeah, they are easy to hone finish wise, the steel takes a nice edge well, this (and they are cheap) are why I chose them.

However actually holding on to them it kind of problematic, Ben noted they were difficult because of this to use on the Edge Pro.

-Cliff

Single ply no-name, the quilted brands are actually easier to cut. Being able to do a clean slice is fairly difficult, I will be really impressed if anyone can push cut it, all the fresh cod heads you can eat.

-Cliff

Cliff,

I'm really crappy at sharpening, so I won't waste your postage. I just want to suggest a few folks who sharpen well, to include in the contest.

Murray Carter seems to consistently sharpen better than anybody else I've come across, even at shows full of the best knifemakers. Carl Thiele (a.k.a. Survivor) can put a heck of an edge on a knife. Jerry Busse seems a bit inconsistent with sharpening, but his sharpest can be very sharp indeed.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I'm curious whether the push-cutting sharpness test I came up with (which we've discussed before) might be of use for this contest?

Best wishes.

There are a lot of people I would like to see as well. Once the demand dies down and I get all the blades back I am going to post this in a few more places. In regards to the tests, the thread cutting I do is similar.

-Cliff

One month, and the very next entry and Ben Dale's sharpness is already improved upon in one aspect. David Rishar's blades were both very sharp, one just edged out Ben Dale's blade by about five percent, but the other scored so high in push cutting I had to recheck it to make sure the numbers were correct. Details can be seen in the above link.

-Cliff

I went to add another entry and noticed I never even finished adding David's, so I compiled his data and he took two records away from Ben Dale and tied with another.

I edited the descriptions a bit more, went into a bit more detail about what is being done and changed the rankings a little as they made no sense when I reread them.

Cliff, my e-mail should be in your box.

Your standardized tests intrigue me. I have my own measures of sharpness, but they're not as quantified as yours. I will be interested to see the results.
