Mirror polishing my S110V.

Unlike you, college boy, I have a JOB! Besides, its been all rainy and cold and crap around here. I'm taking the girls to the farm tomorrow to play in the creek, so I'll have my camera with me. I'll try to grab some pics then.

i do too have a job! its annoying you :p

holding you to this!

what is S110V? any links to a chart comparing toughness, edgeholding and corrosion resistance to the other CPM steels?

Here's a few quick ones...it started raining...again.

I still need to punch out the stud on the S30V and work it with higher grit, and both could use a few minutes on the buffer, but I'm happy the way the 110V is now.

nice! now match the pocket clip and the screws to it!

i'll post some updated pictures of mine once i finish with the second grit tonight.

Thank GOD from 320 grit on was nowhere as hard as the 120! and from then on, every single grit you can see the difference, shinier and shinier, and reflects better and better. so i finished up alllll the way to 1200grit and i just couldn't take it anymore! i'm tired as heck! my fingers hurt. i have 1500 and 2000 grit left, maybe 5000 grit after than. so right now i cleaned it and rubbed green rogue on it and put it back together and this is how it is now.

i can make out the camera in the reflection, but can't quite see my face clearly yet. if i feel like i dont have a life tomorrow i'll probably finish it up, although i still haven't figure out how to sharpen it yet.

Sharpen it? Its a looker, not a user! :D

Looks very nice! Try some Flitz or Semichrome to buff it up a little. I worked on mine a little more today with Mother's Chrome Polish. I didn't hit it with the buffer yet, just did it by hand.

Looking good!

actually, i did clean it with mother's chrome polish. i wish i had the metal polish, this stuff is too watery. i also just ordered some Flitz, on the way, but i also have some of that "as seen on tv", boat/car show polish at work, will give that a shot too. the only buffer i have is a dremel, or a big dewalt one. might try the dremel first.

so i got the green rogue compound, or something similar... wanna teach me how to use it?

First, if your Dremel isn't variable speed, don't use it. They turn waaay too fast. As for the Dewalt, if it turns faster than 2000 RPM, I'd be careful using it. You'd be surprised how fast heat builds up with a buffer. Especially using a Dremel...a very small buffing area running at 20,000 RPM.

Once you get your buffer speed thing sorted out, turn it on and lightly press the end of a green compound stick against it. You want to load it up like you would a strop. Get a thin coat of the green on the buffing wheel and start polishing away. Make sure you run the final application of sandpaper, Flitz, or green from the spine to the edge. This will keep you from putting polishing marks in your blade running from pivot to tip.

Flitz is a very strong polish. You might find you're OK after using it. Apply it with your fingers. Again, spine to edge (or vice versa, but be careful).

I'd take the knife apart again for the polishing. Unless you want to remove the clip and do the whole knife!

EDIT: BTW, I wouldn't waste my time with the "as seen on tee vee" stuff...

thanks. i originally planned on doing the handle as well, as richj had shined up a little bit of it while sharpening... but its a bit too much work, looks real nice as is.

wow if you say Flitz is that strong i'm going to try that first... this green compound really isnt what i thought it was when i bought it. i thought there would be a slight chance i can use it manually, i really had no intention of using a buffer at all. they're both variable speed, but the dewalt can probably kill me.

Using the Flitz by hand should make a difference. Just apply it like you would wax on a car, just not in circular motions. It may leave some very fine finish marks, so again, work it spine to edge, and work it evenly down the blade.

I have used 15000 grit mesh paper for polishing out aircraft windows.Very time consuming process.Comes in a kit will get company name when i return to work if you like.

thanks in advance Dave.

I'm really loving this knife right now. i put it through the sharpmaker, very very patiently this time and it's pretty good right now. by the time i get the Flitz i'd have run it through the 1500 and 2000 grits and i can just imagine how shiny it would be, even before the flitz... ohh i'm so exciteeedd...

SPX, i shined off my laser etching, but you can get pretty deep before it comes off, i think if you do it right you can have it reflective and still have the etching. both of your knives still have a full layer of coating on it. so keep going! do it... do it... do it...

Yeah, some of the coating is still there. I just wanted to knock off the stonewash finish and get to a satin. As Joe (The Mastiff) said earlier, 110V, because of its makeup, still has a "smoky" or darker look to it, but still has a satin type finish to it. I'm still working the 110V with 400, and I'm happy with the results. I still need to press out the thumbstud on the S30V blade, but I think I'll wait until I tear down a S60V blem to set up the press.

Forgive me for a bit of a thread hi-jack but....

I have a knife that would look amazing with a mirror-polish on the edge. But the rest of the blade has a black coating that I don't want to mess up.

How would I go about polishing the edge without
a) ruining the black finish
b) cutting my fingers off

how big of an edge is it?

I'm a bit of a noob, but while polishing my knife the edge gets duller and duller. I'm not done yet, but on my break i resharpened it up with the sharpmaker and the very edge of it doesn't look as pretty as the rest of the blade.

however, RichardJ sharpens knives for a lot of people here with his paper wheel, that thing can make a V edge into a convex edge and shine it up quite nicely. give him a try.

final picture before i send it out to Rich J to have it machine buffed, paper wheel sharpened, and to polish the edge of the handles.

I think i ordered the wrong Flitz polish. I have the spray bottle, I think i needed the paste, so that's not working like i was hoping for... oh well let's see what Rich can do!
