Couple days ago I saw someone had posted a mirror polish on S30.. was mighty fine looking indeed!

What progression was used to obtain that? Would appreciate some insight.

Nutria man you have more one lines then a comedian, it really is hard to explain all the steps to really obtain a mirror polish and just because someone says they do it this way may not work for you because you may lack a tool.

One way to really get some mileage from this forum is to get your hands dirty on a project......my point dive in and you will learn.

I have a bar of S30V thats been in my shop for 2 years, sitting in the corner...waiting:D.......rusting

I can explain more if you like, I do not want to insult you not my intent.

Just looking to help out

To get a mirror polish on S30V first you have to be a masochist. You still have to go through the progression of finer and finer grits.Be patient !

You from derritter.?. that means you are one of them yankee cajun people....
I'm from Houma originally...people who insult us get left in the woods... :p

...how can your S30 be rusting?

I actually have 2 slabs of S90 and 2 of 3V.. making a couple bowies of each...I was asking to see if they ran progressively different belts on the KMG.. or if they hand rubbed with some toothpaste for 900 hours..

I saw several folks had some industrial grade buffers... based on the answer would imply if they really needed those..

sometimes a question is more than a question......cajun thing.. since you are north of I10 you would not understand..:thumbdn::cool:

Do you alternate the grind on each grit change?.. or is that old cooter talk?

Do you use those cork belts?

thanks for any info.

nope cant read
you ever seen "i spit on your grave"

io hear its a good flick

there ar a few steels that i would not waste my time goint o to a hig finish an s30v is one of them

it goes to the pick the steel to the use things (while not a big s30v fan)

i like cpm154 and 3v pick you needs of my 2 favs (also work with "simple steel")

just like picking the steel to the blade use as goes the heat treat top the use also

S30V rusts just sitting out here in North Carolina. Seems more prone to surface rust in the mill finish than steels like 440C, ATS, etc. Enough time and humidity and any steel will rust in the atmosphere I suppose.

S30V takes a very nice hand rubbed finish. It starts looking decent around 400 grit. I tried to mirror a grind with my usual method of taking it up to around 800 on a belt, putting it on a cork belt with green chrome rouge and then finally buffing it with hard buffs and green and white compound. I couldn't ever get it to look right with the buffer. That knife got hand rubbed flats and a cork belt finished grind.

Too many nice steels out there that polish well to waste my time with the S30. Nothing against the steel, I'd just hand or belt finish it.

I dont know S30V but in annealed condition my D2 stock rusts easily. If the stock was heat treated they wouldnt rust that easy....

Okay to tell the truth the Army stationed me here, I am originally from California so tell that "North and South stuff" to someone who cares:D

Nice to know you are working on something....good luck let us know if you need something:thumbup:

Try some cpm 154 that stuff is blessed with shine, just like a cajun with all his teeth:D:D

Yep I have some cpm d2 and the 30v that is kinda pitting , so I sprayed it D40 and wrapped it in butcher paper....no problems now

I definitely agree that annealed S30V is much more prone to rusting. I think that the mill finish has so many pits and divots that it gives more surface area to rust as well, kind of like a blasted finish will. Heat treated and finished S30V is far less prone to rust, but I have seen just about every steel rust out here.

I told Mike Fitz a funny story a couple weeks ago. One of my first 1084 blades I finished up pretty high and blasted then etched it. I wanted to show it off to some coworkers so I threw it in the passenger seat of my car and drove off to work in the morning. On my lunch break I ran out to my car to get the knife and show it off and it had fresh rust on it, this was four hours later . Granted, this is 1084, but some credit must be given to our climate here in NC :D

Cool man!.. I was a 12B . Combat Engineers..in the Army.. 4 years. Was up at Fort Carson for a couple then went to Germany for a couple.

I acquired this piece of 5 Ton leaf spring that I carried for 3 years from place to place... was really thick.. was one of the shorter pieces from the top of the stack. Somehow in shipping it got misplaced.. shame...

Anyway.. cool man.. Army was a great family.
